Big smile just disappeared from my face :( . Someone please notify me when they repair this huge mistake.
Gentlemen... This game is... well.. it's HUGE. I host a monthly game, and the amount of rules clarification and "hold on while I look this up" is constant, and we play ALL THE TIME. The amount of time that it took to get this thing up and running is a staggering amount of resources, that BGA is trying to encourage people to give them a couple of dollars is absolutely within reason.

Also, remember, we now will all clamor for PoK, and eventually for Thunder's Edge... and implementing each of those will be the same, if not more work, then the base game... so settle down, pay for premium membership os BGA has the resources to continue developing the rest of Twilight Imperium and when you are sad that others cannot play more then the base 6 races, just day-dream of all the hours spent getting this thing online... and remember no one should have to work for free, least of all the excellent gentlemen who work to bring us online board games!!! they should be the highest paid among us!

Again... PAX MAGNIFICA BELLUM GLORIOSUM!!!
Sorry, but you're wrong. Turning the site into a pay-to-win experience is not an acceptable outcome. I've been a premium member for what must be a decade, but if I'm not playing with the same rules as my opponent then it is not a fair game.

I'm all for people being compensated for their work, but as the person paying, this isn't what I want.
woah woah woah.. turn on your beep beep lights and back that dump truck up...

No one said "Pay to win" and even as a free member you can still play as Humans and Jol Nar... so don't say "They put the heavy hitters behind the paywall" they didn't. If you don't think I'm right, then you clearly don't play this game that often.

The amount of work that went into getting this online clearly justifies the entire game being only available to Premium members, but letting non-premium members come play even with a limited faction selection hopefully will make more premium members WHICH IS HOW BGA STAYS IN BUSINESS. Yes of course they are here to provide a service to us and let us play our favorite games online, but there are real people behind the scenes feeding their real families with their boardgaming hobby. If you do *ANY* digging into it, you will find that it's actually not that many people... and this website is far more 'a labor of love' then 'a retirement strategy'. So don't throw shade at how they choose to implement Twilight,if you are a premium member you won't even notice any sort of difference... if you aren't... you should be. (Go sign up today!)

Given the cost ($$) of entry to pick up a copy of TI4, I think many of us will be exposed for the first time via BGA. This will strengthen the TI4 community, I expect.

Wait - was it actually BGA employees who got TI4 on here? If I understand correctly, most of these games come from volunteers, so no compensation to BGA actually makes it to the folks who built and tested the games.

We don't know the relationship between BGA and FF games... but you can make strong argument that having TI available to play, even in a limited fashion, here on BGA is good for FF Games, so perhaps that's the deal between BGA & FF Games "You advertise our game for us, we won't charge you to use it." Also, there is a LOT LESS IP protection in the boardgame world then there is in the literature world.

BGA adopted TI for online play in conjunction with FF Games, so FF Games gave them at least a little blessing, if not the whole blessing, but there is perhaps something like "We are about to re-print PoK in November, so please don't release PoK online for a year or three..." But knowing what sort of lift it was to get TI online... if FF Games told that to BGA, I would bet BGA responded with "absolutely no problem whatsoever."

BGA makes money on premium subscriptions. If they have to pay any $$ to game designers that would probably be counter-productive to all parties involved, but all parties involved were probably involved at least in some way to get whatever your favorite board game to BGA.

tl dr; If you're gonna play here, buy a premium membership and be done with it. Then go play Twilight Imperium and I'll see you in space.

PAX MAGNIFICA BELLUM GLORIOSUM!!!

Hard pass for paywalled content beyond the standard premium system. I don’t care how much work a thing took, if huge chunks of the game are locked off for free users who get invited by their premium friends, that just sucks and sets an awful precedent. There’s a reason beyond the practical considerations that you don’t have to get your friends to buy a license to play TI with you when you buy the board game irl. If you buy it, you’ve paid for it and your friends can play with you in full. If every single person needs to pay to get the full contents of the base box, I might as well wait for the steam version to finish and have us all pay for it there. Premium is already encouraged and makes the site a profit with its ability to host any game yourself and all the qol features it comes with; let’s not have it turn games into demos for non-payers on top of that.

Thank you GTSchemer! Congartulations that you got this beast of a game through to release. You did an amazing job! Thank you for alle the work, effort and semi automation solutions that make this game actually really nice and smooth to play turn based. I also love the solutions and possibilty to create or disable card interactions and allerts if you currently dont need them. The x- option on trade save a huge amount of text, negotiation and wait timers. Also the pre-planning of startegy cards is something you dont see anywhere else and that gives the BGA implementation a huge edge over all the other platforms and ways to asynchronously play TI4. Wish you all the best an anwell deserved vacation!

When you say things like “huge chunks of the game are locked off,” it makes it sound like you don’t actually know what’s being restricted.

The full game is available to everyone, and it is 100% playable. If you’ve played TI before, you know that limiting the faction selection isn’t limiting the game itself—especially when two of the strongest factions in the game are among the free choices (and I could make a pretty solid case for three).

The “paywalled content” you’re talking about is something you choose before the game even starts: which aliens you’re going to pretend to be for the next eight hours. You pick one faction, take its stuff out of the box, and put the other 16 factions back in the box. BGA is simply giving free players a smaller pile to choose from before they do exactly the same thing.

And yes, when I invite people over to my house to play TI, I don’t ask them to bring their own copy of the game. But it’s an all-day affair, so I do sometimes ask them to bring snacks. Apparently even my physical copy has microtransactions.

Frankly, I think it’s a pretty elegant solution to: “Okay, we want TI to be 100% playable by anyone on BGA, but this was also an enormous project and we need some way to monetize it.”

You can absolutely dislike that model. But calling six fully playable factions “huge chunks of the game locked away” is pretty dramatic.

So go play the humans. Go wreck house with Sol. And if having only six factions to choose from for free is simply intolerable, there is fortunately already a mechanism for unlocking the other eleven.

It costs about the same as bringing the snacks.
