Personal High Elo

Post by blargh_bah »

Is there a way to see your highest ELO at a game. I see there is a chart showing your ups and downs but not the actual number your ELO peaked at.
If not, there should be included in the player progression section in players profile

It should not, because peak elo is meaningless.

Considering we track ELO, have a progression chart, and have a ranking based on ELO. There are achievements for ELO.

Elo, as a measure of skill, is only meaningful when considering averages and trends. The instantaneous elo is greatly affected by the latest results, especially in high-variance (luck) games. Peak elo is only a measure of the luckiest winning streak (or of the ability to game the system).

Majority of these games require some luck, to varying degrees, and therefore ELO is not an accurate measure of skill anyways.
You have a ELO progression chart for each game which seems far more meaningless than showing a players high ELO. If comparing high ELOs mattered to you, you could always check a players progression chart to look for the trend or spikes.
There are also numerous stats available for each player for each game which have little meaning as well. Less meaning then what a players high ELO is.

Curiously I published the same idea just one day after present post was first published.

I would REALY like to have the highest ELO available. Although it may not be a perfect representation of one's skills, it would be nevertheless a kind of trophy that is not more or less stupid that all the rewards and medals that are poured in my profile (I have got over 300 such chocolate medals)

Current ELO is not more meaningful, if not less

The same is true for the winner of an arena season though, isn't it? The winner is whoever happens to have the highest Arena score at an arbitrary instantaneous moment. But we still award trophies/achievements/XP and such based on this.

I see no harm in having "highest peak Elo" available as a viewable piece of information.

It's a meaningless bit of data. I'm not sure where they'd even bother to put it, though I wouldn't care if the graphs of elo progression showed where the rating points local extrema were at the peaks and falls. Some random searchable bit maybe, if we had a table that let us search up some information, though hardly worth listing unprompted, too much space, especially when you get into multiple games.

One of the more obvious offenders for elo peak nonsense are the high k factor rushes where a player hits a high they'll never reach again due to a lucky streak under the high k factor, where matching it later would require a greater number of consistent wins. It's possible in games where a player never bothers to improve, but even more so in games with low enough ratings players sweep their way near the top on a lucky run with a new account, which gets cleaned up when they inevitably lose or are inactive.

Yes, elo. Saying we have things for elo does not mean we have to have something for peak elo in particular.

Plenty of meaningless trophies we could delete, sure. Though I'm not sure what this has to do with adding another, such a standard isn't really driing excitement to make more of it. Also, trophies are generally specifically completable accomplishments. So comparing them to peak elo, which is a continuous factor and not a single event, makes even less sense.

Saying where someone is currently located is rather nifty information to have. Hardly the end be all of everything, but that's why it keeps adding revisions, and also makes graphs showing the path taken quite helpful, letting players look over discrepancies, of which highest elo often can be. That combination of information can indicate if a player is within or outside their regular performance.

The act of winning an arena season isn't all that special, sure. One could argue holding first in Arena for a period of time or a certain amount of games might be more accurate, though just labelling Arena winners through predetermined timelines is much more straightforward, plus the success condition is much easier to follow. Makes it way easier to manage rotating to a new season too, so there are organizational reasons for having it like that even if it's not perfect from a gameplay standard.

Peak elo is one of hose things that wouldn't kill the site to add, but probably isn't worth the effort, or the space to place it for every game. A detail searchable under a larger search engine for random stuff like that maybe, but not much else.
