Tech Tree games

Post by Pete Boteman »

I've not played many tech tree games. On paper, the concept of tech trees appeals to me. Please suggest some tech trees games I can try on BGA.

I am not quite sure what you mean by "Tech Tree Games". I suspect you mean a special kind of engine building mechanism, with a possible sequence of upgrades a player can unlock?

On BGA you can find for example these engine building games, which as far as I can remember have this mechanism, but I am not 100% sure (roughly sorted by complexity, from least to most):
Roll Through the Ages, 7 Wonders, Gizmos, Jump Drive, Kingscraft, New Frontiers, It's a Wonderful World, The Vale of Eternity, Saint Petersburg, The Oracle of Delphi, Puerto Rico, Yokohama, Apiary, Path of Civilization, Wondrous Creatures, Beyond the Sun, Ark Nova.

Enjoy :-)

Probably the most techtreeish of all tech-tree games is Beyond the Sun.

Thank you both. Of these games, the only ones I am familiar with are Jump Drive and Ark Nova, both of which I enjoy. I probably am not using "tech tree" appropriately, but both JJ and AN feel more like "card prerequisite" games, where for some cards you need to meet certain conditions.

You both mentioned Beyond the Sun, which I had heard of but knew nothing about. In my mind, I think I confused it with any number of 4X space games. A closer look reveals it to be the tech-tree concept I had in mind, where you purposely develop a technology to enable developing additional technologies. It looks like BtS really centers this mechanism using worker placement. So I am keen to try it!

BtS looks like a 4x/"dudes on a map" type game, and there is some of that, but the major focus is on the tech tree. Depending on the type of techs you end up investing in, you may end up with a heavy presence on the board, or very little, and there isn't any combat (it's more like area control).

It sounds like what you're looking for.
