iPhone Zoom and Tap problems

Post by Hopkins »

Here are two problems I have when using the iPhone to play games on BGA. Firstly, an issue which affects most games:

- Pinch Zoom triggers swipe commands for the individual finger directions. So, if my fingers splay apart vertically then it often triggers swipe up or swipe down (which reloads the page) or left or right (triggering back or forwards). Infuriating.

- Some games - especially Puerto Rico - will fail to register taps. You can end up having to spam tap and hoping that one of them will work.

This happens on both Safari and my browser of choice: Vivaldi. Surely this infuriates more people than just me?

Sadly there is actually no difference on iOS with browsers, they are forced to use the same rendering engine of Apple so if there is a bug, it's very likely to be accross all browsers.
And be sure it's infuriating to us devs as well to have to work with iOS rendering engine that is working so poorly ans so unreliably compared to other engines.

I did not know that! Thanks for the reply. Very frustrating, I can imagine.

I have had this issue a very long time in games on BGA. In fact, I posted a thread years ago on this very issue.

What I've noticed the last few days is that it also affect the Games in Progress page, which I haven't had problems with previously. The forums works fine and have always.

Surely it is something that BGA does that most other websites does not that makes it so difficult to use iOS.

Ah, thanks, I did attempt a search before posting but I missed that! Good to know that it’s a widespread problem, but then surprising that it hasn’t been taken seriously yet. I believe that outside the US Apples phones tend to be less popular than Google’s, so perhaps none of the core developers use an Apple touch device!

Apple phones are certainly popular everywhere. I don't even know what is a Google phone.

That's more clear. With my disinterest in phones and marketing, I can't even be bothered to know who is associated to what exactly.

Be aware that developing for web means supporting PC with at least the 3 major browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge), and potentially other smaller browsers (though many don't), as well as mobile devices of both Android and iOS, which can have different behaviours on different versions, and even specialised versions of the operating system for specific brands of phone (in the case of Android at least, I don't think Apple does that), plus again, potentially multiple browsers on mobile devices. And yes, if you don't have an Apple device to test with, it can make developing for that device difficult. Particularly in terms of touch functionality, as far as I understand it (the software I develop doesn't use a lot of touch functionality, apart from standard clicks, so I'm not as familiar, but I know it can be a bit of a pain). That's a lot of different environments to be testing for, even if you ignore the lesser used browsers.

Please tell me that you´re under 30. We need more younger people who share this opinion :D

(That probably gives you some idea of my age!)
