How did you learn to play well?

I found it helpful to learn the tiles, and to limit expansions to The River and inns and cathedrals. And to play in 3-tile mode, so I can plan better. I am amazed people can play this game well with only one tile in hand .

I used to play on "another site" and always played the first two expansions. I hated playing the basic game. However, I always knew that the "good" players prefer the basic game so when I started playing on BGA that is all I have played. Now it would seem really weird to go back to the expansions (on BGA, for home play it doesn't matter).
