Looking for a developer to bring "Sovereign: Fall of Wormwood" to BGA

Post by gabeg0doi »

Hello everyone,

I’m Gabe from IXION Gameworks, the publisher of Sovereign: Fall of Wormwood.

We are currently exploring development options for bringing Sovereign: Fall of Wormwood to Board Game Arena and would be happy to hear from developers interested in the project.

Sovereign: Fall of Wormwood is a a 2-4 player tactical card game where each player controls a burgeoning far-future civilization at the brink of war; combining elements of worker placement games and card battlers Sovereign creates a dynamic hybrid experience where a society can rise and fall in under 2 hours, with over 400 unique cards.

A bit more about the game: Players choose one of ten factions represented by a prebuilt deck of 32 unique cards specific to that faction, and 20 cards called Echoes- remnants of the ark that brought humanity to this world. The goal is to score ten Echoes and win the game, but an Echo is always vulnerable until scored, whether it's in your hand or on the table. Players defend their own Echoes with units and facilities they build, they can forge them themselves or steal them from other players- build or conquer by attacking where you think they're hidden, it's up to you.

The game is optimized for multiplayer, with an array of cards that can be used to hinder or help opponents - encouraging fragile, temporary alliances.

We can provide:
- English rulebook
- Digital card and component assets
- Box and promotional images
- Physical prototype/sample if useful
- Direct support for rule clarifications, edge cases, testing, and feedback

Hello,

I'm a BGA developer (Lunalol) with several games already published on the platform. I'd like to add a word of caution for the publisher: Sovereign is a demanding game to implement, and I'm a bit surprised to see developers who are new to BGA applying for a project of this size.

Between the reflexes playable at almost any moment, the citizens moving between zones and several hundred cards with interacting abilities, this is not a first project. I would encourage anyone starting out to begin with something simpler. AI tools help, but they don't replace a developer's experience on a project like this.

Sovereign deserves a well-prepared implementation, so I'd recommend choosing a developer who has already shipped complex games on BGA.

Of course, this is only my own opinion and doesn’t commit anyone but me.

Cannot agree more. Having 400+ unique cards in the main deck + 10 faction with 32 cards each looks like a huge effort and requires good architecture and understanding of coding principles as well as BGA framework knowledge.
Also it's not mentioned in the post if this project is paid or not.

Hi.

Thanks for the heads-up and for sharing your experience, Lunalol and KuWizard.

I’m currently working on games that are fairly complex in terms of animation and visual rendering. To broaden my experience, I’d be interested in a more static game whose complexity lies mainly in its many effects and interactions. But perhaps this is indeed a too big project to start with.

My initial idea was to work on the meta rules first, gradually add the factions, and then implement the cards by effect category. But without having the game, rules, and cards in front of me, it’s hard to judge.
