As a developer myself I do, indeed, appreciate this. The thing I find most annoying is that, when HTTP and the world wide web started, the idea was that the content would be described and the device would render as appropriate. Of course, it was never imagined that the browser would become a virtual machine, and so perhaps the fact that it works as well as it does is remarkable!

BGA is like being in 2008 sometimes. We aren't talking IE6 compatibility here.

Building a cross platform compatible web app is not rocket science in almost 2027.

There is no better place online to play boardgames than BGA, I want it to explode and grow like crazy.... but these kinds of issues are why BGA doesn't grow. Many things are clunky, look outdated, and suffer from performance issues.

I'm pretty sure some phone manipulation details are not what is preventing the site to grow (if it's even true that it's growing less than it should).

There are much more important matters than wanting BGA to include all the latest and shiny web developments. This is how they justified the recent tournament overhaul, but no one cares about that, and no one had any issue with the way things looked before, quite the contrary.

The site should focus on functionality, security and integrity, making sure its history is preserved and people are able to play games normally. Adding new things comes after, only once you know the basics are ensured, and only if it's a change people actually want.

We are people who play board games here, I'm pretty sure most of us value culture and quality over being fed new things that people eat up just because they are new. We are not like phone consumers looking for the latest model and not caring about anything else.

I am still impressed by the phenomenal flexibility and scalability of the platform. I think that a strength is the decentralised nature of the game implementations, but this also gives rise to the inconsistencies we see. For example, in Heat I can zoom around and click successfully. With Arc Nova I can click perfectly well but trying to pinch zoom will trigger either a reload or some other command around 50% of the time. Puerto Rico has trouble with both. Sometimes using the “request desktop site” helps. I suspect that there are some JavaScript options which some game developers simply don’t realise cause problem on some platforms.

As i said, no it's not that easy at all. It's not about using some experimental feature that would broke some browsers. It's about iOS that just has unexpected behaviors that could even be described as buggy. There is no actual documentation that would explain that this particular setup would break or not iOS. We have to try out stuff to try to understand what might cause the issue, just to have it broken in a future version of iOS rendering engine...
The only general thing we know is that iOS does not like heavy rendering so that's why you are seeing issues on bga for more complexe games and not on a typical website that usually have very basic "weight"
