Filtering for players on mobile devices please?

Post by RNAlexander »

The intermittent connections can cause real problems in fast-turn-setting real-time games.

In particular in combination with how flaky the site itself has been lately.

Perhaps some kind of notification for players joining fast-pay games from a mobile device that their connection stability and timing might impact the game play quality for everyone?

The quality of a connection does not mainly depend on which kind of device someone uses. Example: When using a mobile phone, tablet PC or iPad at home, I'm connected to my local WLAN, which provides a very good connection. Why should I get blamed, because I use a "mobile device"?

BGA's device detection is not accurate. It will often say that I'm using a mobile device even when I'm on my laptop. And there are times when I actually am using my phone but it doesn't show up that way. Interestingly, my phone is way faster than my laptop...

Well, a player's reputation/karma is far more important than what device they're using.
Just use karma filter, and u'll be fine for >95% of games.

I find these responses to be unhelpful and dismissive. My experience is the same as OP. Players that the site labels as mobile are ON AVERAGE far slower than those who are not. Please note the emphasis. I've been on this site for years with thousands and thousands of games played, and it has consistently been my experience that mobile players ON AVERAGE have been far slower than non-mobile for as long as the icon has been present. Again, note the emphasis. That we cannot filter for that is unfortunate.

Emphasis noted. Both times.

Allow me to express doubt at this claim. Human beings suffer from confirmation bias all the time; unless you have actual statistical data, your “consistent experience” doesn’t actually mean much.

Though I do wonder, how can you have a “consistent experience” that then requires hedging your claim (twice!) with “on average”? That doesn’t sound consistent to me. It sounds like sometimes they’re slower and sometimes they’re not, and you think you know what the average is, but do you really? Or is it just confirmation bias, you notice the slow ones and don’t even notice what icon timely players have next to their name?

Thank you for dismissing my experience. Feels great, bro. Since I don't care to be on the bad side of the mods, I'll just leave it at that.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from these forums it is that what people think they experience isn’t always what they actually experience. (Just do a search for “rigged dice” and you’ll see what I mean.)

Since this thread is literally the first time I’ve seen anybody express these concerns, I do think it’s worth asking whether your “consistent (on average)” experience is actually happening. But if you’re just gonna feel aggrieved and attacked, then rest assured, BGA management will never implement this feature, so we can end it all here.
