M20: Zombiefest - Strategy

Post by dizzymisslizzy17 »

Hi!

I've seen a lot of games struggle with this map. One strategy that I've been using lately that has been successful is to ignore the top two buildings until you've emptied the zombie reserves. Instead open the middle building and bottom building on the first and/or second turn. You can move down 1 square, search the middle building that faces the center square for weapons, and since the zombies are spawning slowly, you have time to get equipped and kill everything.

It isn't sexy - your survivors don't get to the red threat level - but it works well. Just thought I'd share for anyone needing some help with that level.

I have played this mission several times with different many groups of players, and have never won. Solo I can win over 50% of the time. Your strategy is the one I use, though where I see the biggest issue is players staying to close to the zombies when the reserves are empty. Each time a card is drawn and that reserve is empty, all zombies on that card get and extra activation. So if you are in a zone next to zombies, or even 2 zones away in the open, and there are 2 or 3 cards pulled with that zombie type during the zombie phase, they will move into your zone and then attack. This is typically how the game is lost.

My strategy is after opening the side buildings and the south building and clear them out, get some good weapons and then camp out in the south building. You can shoot out the door, or run out - melee - run back in. The key is after the reserves run out, hide in the building, which means being at least 2 rooms in so they can't see you (line of sight). If they can't see or hear you, they shouldn't move to you. Again, this means during your turn you move to the door, attach once or twice, then move back into the building and hide. It's a grind since you can't attack all 4 or 5 actions, but it works. There is no shame in hiding, and facing them head on seems to almost always fail.

One other suggestion...don't get spread out. Keep close as a group. It's better to take a couple of hits spread between 3 survivors than one kid by himself taking 2 hits - **Mission Failed**. Also, once the Walker reserve is empty and all walkers are eliminated, searching will not spawn a zombie. Drawing the zombie card during the search will have no results. Thus it is safe to search on that final action with no consequence.

And finally...Communicate, Communicate, Communicate. This greatly increases your chance of survival. Tell your group what you are doing or planning on doing next turn. Talk about strategy. Talk about switching weapons to the survivors that can use them best. Silence usually means death.

I agree with all the discussion so far on this thread. I have won this mission at 3p multiple times, and my current strategy is as the OP stated ... open the green door on turn 1 (or turn 2 at the latest) ... never any reason to open the blue door. That makes it so every zombie killed from that point on counts toward your victory (and it helps keep the intensity of the zombie fight down for the beginning of the game when all the Actors are trying to get suitably equipped). Opening any building other than the right small one in center and the south building at green door is counterproductive and not necessary ... objectives can be gathered after all the zombies on the map are killed and there are no more left to spawn.
