I've been reading Agatha Christie mysteries recently and this is beginning to feel like one.

"How could a timer exist in a non-timer game? And why would Mr. Smith expel his lifelong friend from a game?"
"Why does BGA have real-time non-timer games?"

Because they didn't understand what "skipping" would do? I don't know, but it's there in the log.

Yeah, that's a question that has been asked many times. I had thought that they removed the ability to make those games, because all it ever did was confuse poor people who leave their "friendly" game for 4 hours and come back to it ended. Switching from real-time friendly to turn-based friendly makes a kind of sense though, so maybe?

Don't be confused by this though: "Friendly mode: no rankings, no time limit per turn, no penalties. Real-time game." That's just a display bug where the turn-based friendly games also described themselves as "real-time" (also longstanding).

Expectations.

Sometimes I want to play a real-time game in friendly mode. Sure, there's no guarantee that the other player(s) will play at real-time speed, and I can leave at any moment anyway. But I don't want someone joining and expecting/intending to make a move once a week, when I want something like one move per minute.

Also, real-time games, friendly or not, prevent you from joining other real-time games, encouraging your undivided attention.

This reminds me of a discussion from a while ago where people were saying it's useless to have a real time option for solo mode. I didn't really agree, because the clock still serves to set your expectations a certain way. Like a self imposed challenge, or simply giving you more incentive to play the game promptly, not letting it go on forever because you are lazy or get distracted with other things.

Sometimes people need tools that help improve their discipline, even if it's things they enjoy doing, like using sticky notes or creating a planning for what they want to get done in a day.

Very true. Sometimes if I'm learning a new game, I'll post a game in friendly mode. But I find it frustrating when someone joins and then makes one move every 4 days.

Friendly mode isn't supposed to have time limits (unless this is some special thing for TI, but I couldn't spot how it could be done even with that game).

That said, one of your other players kicked out the player over time, so it would seem not everyone was on the same page as far as that goes (or perhaps they didn't realise, but I think it does explain what you're about to do when you choose to skip them). As far as I know, the kicked player can rejoin and you can play the game out, but the result will be ignored in terms of reporting (the kicked player is seen as a loser, and all other players tie for the win). Still, if it's Friendly, you may not care about that.
Thank you, do you know how, mechanically, the kicked player can rejoin?

It's been a long time since I've seen the screen, but I think it's quite obvious if the player goes to that game - the kicked player should see something like "your turn was skipped" and a button to rejoin the game.
