You don't have to have played against someone to give them a private red thumb. Those can be for any reason, e.g., being obnoxious in the forums. I'm not saying that applies to you, but it definitely describes some users.

Or having been (perhaps falsely) accused of cheating in the forums. I guess there are users who see a "XXX is a cheater" post and quickly proceed to red thumb XXX.

You can go on any player's page and check anybody's given and received red thumbs that way. Turns out private red thumbs are not private afterall.

You can go to any page (not just a profile page) and view the page source to see a list of red thumbs given and taken, but it's always your red thumbs.

This will give a list of player id's; copy an id at the end of https://boardgamearena.com/player?id= to see the player's profile. BTW a list 'red_thumbs_taken' is also stored on your profile, so you can also check who red-thumbed you.
Interesting hidden feature. Seems I have received 6 in 542 games, although 3 of them are from people I never played against in any game.

Two were from people who I beat in Terraforming Mars; I have no idea why. Perhaps they just preferred to be matched against players more at their level?

The 6th one was from my own spades partner, who wanted to switch the game to turn based (who plays turn-based SPADES?) because of a prior obligation. The response was "no" from everyone else at the table, along with, "why did you start a game you knew you couldn't finish"?
I also have a bunch, around 10, from people I've never played; they all seem to be heavy into Terraforming Mars, in which I'm a good but not great player.

That doesn't make sense to me. So you write a note because you realize the reason is "silly", but you red thumb anyway?

Kaladry wrote: ↑20 March 2025, 11:42 It's not ridiculous when it's just a personal red thumb. It's not like they're reporting you or you're in trouble, they just don't want to play with you, and you can do the same. That's the beauty of personal red thumbs. Maybe you don't like someone's play style, that's not reportable but you can block them with the personal red thumb so you never have to play them again.
Having a personal issue with someone even though they did nothing wrong is exactly what is ridiculous. Who does that? When you look at the adults in your life around you, do you imagine such behavior from them? What would you think of them if you knew that they are the kind of person who does that behind the anonymity of their screen?

I suspect some people also red thumb others by mistake. For example I encountered an issue recently where someone was DM'ing me about one of my tournaments while at the same time having me red thumbed which means they wouldn't be able to read my replies anyway. When I contacted them via a 3rd party, they told that 3rd party that I must have done something to warrant red thumbing me, I knew this was dubious so I looked into it, and it turned out the last time we'd played a game together several months earlier they'd been booted from the game, but it wasn't me who booted them as shown clearly in the game log. So they either automatically assumed it was me not realising the game log tells you who booted you, or they just red thumbed everyone at that table as a result.

You can also red-thumb people that repeatedly join your tables and quit them or do not accept to start or just disappear. It's annoying and a red thumb solves it. It will not appear in any log.
