I don't get the strategy on this game (As a Gentleman)

Hi, I'm not sure about the best strategy as a Gentleman:
- Should I try to looks as a good dandy but change my cards so I'll be the lest one and keep my own love?
- Or should I try to have the best cards for the best Dandy?

I don't think there is much/any strategy to it - it's basically chaos and luck - the designer (over on BGG forums) said the intent of the game was primarily to cause emotional reactions: "Even as the designer, I sometimes feel hurt and upset as I play, but that was the intended experience".
