Xiangqi (Chinese chess)

Post by sourisdudesert »

We are happy to introduce today one of the most played board games on Earth : Xiangqi, also called Chinese Chess.

For those who are familiar with Chess: Chinese chess has a lot of similarities with Chess, but is in fact a really different game. Of course, Xiangqi is an abstract game for 2 players where the goal is to capture the enemy King/General.

Important note: traditional Xiangqi is using ideograms on pieces, but if you are not familiar with these you choose to display Western pieces instead from the in-game menu / preferences / Piece Style / western.

Here are some interesting things to know :
_ pieces are placed on intersections.
_ the board is crossed by a river (that your Elephants can't cross).
_ your General starts in a special zone of the board (your "palace"), with 2 "guards". These 3 pieces are not allowed to leave your palace.
_ a Canon is moving a little bit like a "Rook", except for captures: he has to "jump" over another single piece (friend or foe) before capturing a piece after the jumped piece.

To learn how to play you can watch this video.

Xiangqi adaptation for Board Game Arena has been developed by wucnuc using BGA Studio: thank you a lot for having this idea and for this brilliant adaptation!

I think it would be more user friendly if the player can select the labels of the chess pieces as abstract figure labels.
People who are not Chinese may feel difficult to understand the meaning of the Chinese characters on the labels

BGA may use abstract figure labels like these:

oic, thank you.

And, I found bugs in the spectator mode:
1) all piece are red
2) the application cannot load the real-time move of the players and a log show that "Application loading ...", need to keep pressing f5 to refresh and get the new move of the players

just like below:

What is called a 'Tower' in the explanation of the Cannon should be the Rook, assuming you tried to refer to the regular chess piece.

Is that possible to open a game as a black player (i.e. play second).

I think it will be easier to get opponent.

1. The translation of Chinese Version was wrong in the first line.

"the most played" has been translated as "the well played"(instrument).

A most precise translation should be "最多人玩的" instead of "最演奏的".

2. The translation of Chinese Version was wrong too: King/General. General is translated as "normal", but i think it should be "將帥" instead of "一般".

The translation is done by the community. You can contribute directly by fixing incorrect translations in the translation center.
