April Fools' Day : Artificial intelligence

Post by sourisdudesert »

Thanks to all of you for your laughs and comments on yesterday's BGA April Fools' Day joke.

Like you, we like board games because this is a way to exchange with (real) people, a way to meet new people, and a way to share the pleasure of game. A shared pleasure: this is why we consider that playing board games is more enjoyable than playing a video game alone.

So yes, we are thinking about introducing some AI on BGA, but not to push you to play alone. AI would be good to replace a player that left a game halfway through, to help beginners to learn a game, or to play the "3rd or 4th player" for a game that is better in such a configuration. By the way we invite all developers that would be interested to develop an AI on BGA to contact us (contact (at) boardgamearena.com).

Long live board games! And long live (human) board games players!

Bravo BGA, on all counts. Such a great website. I am glad that I (re)discovered it.

Peace,
Jason

I would actually have loved this feature, would make it so much easier to try out new games without a bunch of people breathing down your neck, constantly worrying about their ELO or thumbs up/down. In fact an AI would probably play some games more intelligently than 95% of the players on BGA :P

I agree. An AI for learning the game mechanics and just how it translates digitally as opposed to the real thing would be amazing.

I wrote an AI for Gyges which beats all humans, one of an number of AIs I've written going back to 1980. I have no interest in web-programming or user interfaces, but there are many two-player games of the sort I write code for - Othello, Chess, Gyges... any pure skill perfect information game. No chance, no modeling opponents or other psychology - did one game like that and realized I only enjoy the hard core computer science behind pure logic games. If there's a game of this sort that BGA wants a good move-engine for I'm happy to consider the task.

I'd love for AI to be available for a lot of BGA games. Not only for helping new players get familiar but also for those times when you might get interrupted and don't know how long you'll be online. Fire up an AI game, play with an always there responsive player and quit whenever you want.

This isn't really my idea. My idea is that we create an AI for an extra player that is needed for the game. For example: Coloretto and Perudo need 3 players for the game to work. This is hard to fill--especially for a real-time game. Instead of waiting for 3 players, just make it 2 players + AI. Easier to fill.

It has been already created a bot to play? I think I've seen a few days ago, but now I do not locate it

It's a great idea to learn to play a game :)

In Can't Stop you can play against a bot, but this already had existed for a while on April 1st. Perhaps you spotted this one?
