Losing by default on time

Post by DoubleSpliff »

I have just recently lost a game in a Backgammon tournament because my opponent somehow used the time differences and I was then timed out. The game over ran it's time allocation and so he won by default because he had more time left on his clock even though I was in a winning position. I ALWAYS play ALL my available moves at least 3 times a day (morning before work, afternoon after work & again before bed) My opponent played one move every other day. How can it be that I lose because time ran out? This seems grossly unfair. What makes it worse is that this is not the first time this has happened to me in a tournament. Something needs to change.

You lost because you took more time, it is as simple as that. If you can't play enough to finish the in the time given then it is your fault not your opponents. I looked through the game you mentioned and as each move is time stamped, it is clear you took more time (by ~25 hours). So, things worked as they should. Your claim that your opponent moved every other day is simply false.

I would recommend not joining tournaments with short time limits unless you are online all the time, or at the very least on constantly over 12 hours a day...b/c then you are guaranteed to take less time that your opponent. Being online multiple times a day is not enough to guarantee you can finish a given tournament in time...check the time allotted for games and factor in the number of turns for a given game to figure out average moves per day needed to finish.
