Abandoned but not quit?!

Can someone tell me how to get out of this abandoned game without looking like I was the one who abandoned it?

Is a player not playing? You can:
At first, remember that each player has the absolute right to think for the entire allotment of thinking time.
Try to contact this person via the chatroom.
You may be disconnected from the server and the other player(s) may be waiting on you: refresh the page (hit F5) to check.
If the other player is definitely not there, you just have to wait until the player's time to think is over:
As soon as your opponent is out of time, you can make him skip his/her turn.
DO NOT quit the game by yourself: you will get a leave penalty and the other player will not.

This is also a rated game, so that's another reason I don't want to quit,
because I will be the one to lose points. The clock is now at 2.5 hours.

The turns of this player are skipped (this player left the game or was out of time)

I still don't know if it's safe to leave this game after 24 hours.
Am I going to loose points if I select return to main site?

My opponent agreed to a real time game, and the ELO rating system was set to ON.
It isn't right that I just wanted to have a game of chess and got hung up for 24 hours because the other person left.
There is something really wrong with your system. Why is there no penalty for what my opponent did?

Hi,
When you see this window (end of game, return to main site or look again ...), the game is already finished (abandon means that the game was abandonned, not that you're going to abandon if you return to main site). So you can safely close this window or click the return to main site button.

The screen did not show up for at least three hours,
(between 3 and 24 hours) on a real time and ELO ranked game.
Why is that?

From the screenshot it looks like you were playing a 5 minute game? That means that after five minutes waiting your opponent's clock will have gone negative. The site does not award automatic victory if an opponent goes out of time, however, you can claim that victory whenever you like with the button that appears at the top of the game screen.

It's useful for it to work this way, because many people play just for the fun of playing, and in some cases it would be a shame to end an otherwise interesting game just because an opponent has gone over

I've looked for this button, and I think you must be confusing it for a button that does something else.

This site does keep track of when a game is abandoned on the person's profile as a negative.
Yet in this case it didn't happen. Seems to me this user got away with abandoning the game
without the usual negative adjustment to their scores related to abandoning a game.

I don't know all the terms that are used at this site but I wish they would get the terms
clear when there are situations when Quit does not mean Abandon, it only means Close.
I think because Quit seems so close to Abandon in meaning the word should be avoided/replaced.

I don't know what that "take the victory now" button is he's talking about either. Although, I don't know for sure that maybe all my abandoned games weren't multi-player in which case maybe that doesn't show. But I don't recall ever seeing a such thing.

The thing is claiming it was skipping the turns of your opponent. Are you sure you didn't tell it to do that? If not, that sounds like an error right there. But even if you do that, you should get x% of the ELO for the victory and you'd get 1 point (score) and they'd get none.

As for it not ending the game even after 3 hours, I don't know what it does on live games, but on turn-based, if someone has just abandoned the game, it won't end for like at least a month, I'm not sure how long. But it stays around a good long time. (If you tell it to skip their turns, you should after that being able to leave the game with no penalty. Maybe that's what was meant by "take the victory now." It doesn't say that, but that will be the ultimate result.) Anyway, the point being is that it's going to take some time before it decides someone abandoned it.

You are right, though. They don't seem to be getting any kind of penalty for this. They should get the negative ELO, an over-time, and maybe a quit as well. I know he should have gotten the first two. In your game history it shows neither of you having a score and just says "undefined." You could always report that as a bug. I had that happen recently. I was able to leave a red thumb for someone so at least they got dinged in some way. You could try that. (I can try to find that game and see what the circumstances were, and then I can thumb your bug report if you do it.)

As for the words quit and abandon, there is a subtle difference in them. To "quit" the game is an intentional act and it should end immediately. Abandon means they simply never showed up again, and then you have to skip their turns, etc. I think both will result in the "left game" on their record, and very few people actually "quit" a game. I'm not really sure what other words you could use for those, but "quit" is a choice in the menu. They have to use some kind of word for it.

Yes, sorry if what I said about claiming victory was confusing, I couldn't think of the wording on the button. It is "Skip turns for players out of time" - or something very similar to that - and yes, it awards you the win, but depending on game progression, not necessarily much ELO.
