Running out of time in tournaments

How long is it polite to wait to skip a player (and thus win the game) in a tournament?

Ultimately time limits are there for a reason, so skipping at -1 minute is acceptable, though perhaps not sporting. I'd say what is sporting depends on the type of tournament. If you are in a single elimination or swiss and your game is holding up other games, I'd give at most 24 hours. If the game is nowhere close to finishing, I wouldn't even wait that long since it is just delaying the inevitable. If it is a round robin and the person seems to be making some effort to play I'd be a little more lenient as you aren't holding the rest of the tournament up.

I've run into this in my first game in my first tournament. Can the other player use a holiday joker to extend their time? I assumed they could.

The holiday jokers are not applied in the tournaments.

some tourneys have had 24 hour timers to wrap up a turn.based game ... in these ones, i definitely give the opponent the benefit of the doubt as long as they are playing.

however, one of my opponents saw fit to wait until i was just about to beat him to 'call the clock' on me, despite my continuing to play. that earned him a red thumb from me.

That is what I don't understand, namely as to why allow a person to end a game prematurely in a tournament. It should be disabled.

Seems the people who call the clock are getting a "cheap" win, namely if they are losing in the game. Like another person they get the red thumb as well.

Yes, generally I wait 1 day after skip turns and depends of game progress, if it's more than 80% i prefer wait a little more. Also I check if lot of people are waiting for next game...

This happened to me today...

User "Apattrick75" did this we me and with "dombourge" on a Puerto Rico tournament...

Can somebody help us to stop this unfair behaviour ?

It is not "unfair" behavior. The rules can be applied equally to all players. The time limit is shown before the tournament starts. It is up to the players to make sure they finish within the allotted time.

That being said, while kicking someone for going over time is not unfair, it generally is not sporting.
