"Apprentice level," when applied to Seasons, is a specific game setting -- the starting hand cards are pre-determined. It does not mean that the people playing the game are not able to play it well. However, it is designed to allow people equally unfamiliar with the game a roughly equal chance of winning. It also means that people familiar with the game have the fewest choices to make.

The higher "levels" add more variety to the game -- first with a draft mechanic for getting your initial hand, then with more cards (with vastly more combinations of effects) introduced.

One does not need to earn a starting ability -- this is simply a game setting.

What one may have to earn is a ranking -- beginner/average/good/master/expert. This is earned through defeating other players on this site. If nobody joins the games you create, you may have to widen the limits of the game. Either set up a game turn-based, or be on at a time when there are many players to play real-time (early evening Europe, USA, and Japan times). This may help find people willing to play.
