This is better to turn it off. But if your levels are quite the same and each of you win 50% of the time, you won't have any problem.

So to be perfectly clear on the subject... you can play unranked games with a 2nd account against yourself to learn a game? I have always though that this was strictly against the rules.. Thanks in advance!

I don't see this as an issue. The flag of same IP account is more for if you & your wife were playing with other players....more of an 'fyi' for other players as it would be easy for you & your wife to 'team up' and cheat. That said....I think most players wouldn't mind playing against both of you as long as it was clear you weren't cheating.

As far as the two of you playing against each other in 2-player games....the safest thing would be to turn ELO off....however, if you win/lose more or less at the same rate....you are okay....you aren't cheating the system.

Recently, we had again several serious cases of players using multiple accounts to boost their ELO ranking on Board Game Arena. Their ELO has been resetted to a much lower value (most often, 1500), and multiple accounts has been removed.
Good job, guys! :)

The rules specify that 'kingmaking' is a problem. If the game is not ranked, there is not a problem, by definition.
Does it mean you two cannot play ranked games? No. But playing ranked games will make players and mods monitor whether you are working together instead of playing against each other.

It's the unfortunate downside of board gaming becoming more and more popular / mainstream - an otherwise very mature and serious community gradually becomes plagued by the same childish issues that plague the gaming community in general: cheaters, trolls, rude communication etc. That's sad, but it's good that you are taking the proper measures to slow down this process.

This is my concern as well. My husband has been thinking about joining BGA so we can play games without having to worry about set up and take down and score keeping, but if it's something the system is going to flag it's not worth risking my account.
