Les Inventeurs - automatisme

Post by kerkael »

Hello,

You are not the first who propose it. Administrators oppose automation. They think that an online game shouldn't be easier than real life one.

This is not the exact reason. We DO think that online game should be more easy than a real life one. However, introducing too much automation leads sometimes to accelerate the game so much that you don't understand what is happening. For ex, with Inventors, if your opponent refresh his inventors automatically, you could have the impression that you play 2 times in a row (or from the opponent point of view : that his turn has been skipped).

You don't understand what is happening when you play the game 1st time. After you play it 2-5-10 times you are completely sure what happened. Maybe a good decision is to allow players to skip some animation/automative moves by option. The reason is that after you learn the game every useless move, every slow animation cause frustrating.
Also you have a game log to show information. You can use disappearing text to show information about auto-moves for real-time games. You don't say that turn-based players don't understand what happened in the game although they don't see opponents moves.
Many good strategy games (including Heroes 3 and Civilization V, VI) have a possibility to skip animation or make it very fast. And for some games fans create mods only to make animation faster. So it isn't only my opinion, it's the solution tested by time.

There are certainly solutions (more complicated than for Civ which is a Solo game). But by experience, when we did this in the past, we got tons of bug reports from players not understanding what happened - not everyone take the time to read the log.

Conclusion : as a rule of thumb, when there is a risk, we don't automate. Otherwise we do.

If someone has time to write bug reports he actually has time to read the log. I don't know, maybe it is hard to read it on the tablet or on the phone. Maybe you should mention in the rule summary below the game that some moves are automated.
Now players who play a lot suffer due to someone don't understand something. As I wrote before you can make an option for auto-moves and fast animation in the table options or in the user's settings.
Anyway, it's your users suffer. You can conduct a survey among those who plays 30+ games per month. I will not bring this question up again.

P.S. Civilization is a multiplayer game that can be played online.

And when the player is out of time ?
Do you prefer let the other players kick him out of the game, rather than automate ?

This is a completely different subject. We are talking about automation = do an action for a player when there is no other possible action. We are not talking about an AI, which would be necessary to play instead of a player who left the game.
