This occurs (to me) infrequently, but when it does it is somewhat poor form to simply close the game once I (or others) arrive.

Once, ok. Four times, a bit much. You may have a condition (ELO, competitive rating, name you remember, etc.) supporting the action to close a self-opened game, but it would be courteous to mention to players who took the time to consider joining your game a brief "why".

This alone would limit numerous flames and red thumb situations that continue. Not a huge issue, but one that's still out there.
i fail to see how closing a table is cause for any ruffled feathers or an increasing chance of red thumbs. if the table admin doesn't want to play with someone who joins ... they are free to expel that player or cancel the game altogether if they don't think the table will fill up. if there are others already at the table, a courtesy comm might be appropriate .. but not a requirement.

if this is happening often to someone ... it might be time for them to look in the mirror.

The post on game closing was a support point for courtesy comming, not a snowflake comment.

While this has only occurred to me perhaps 3 times in several years, past commentors in the forums do mention this as a relative issue related to red thumbing (i.e. style of play/uncommunicative players) so it is relevant to comment on without need for a mirror.

Red thumbs are a way to make sure you never have to play a particular player again. They are absolutely subjective and a 'matter of opinion.'

If I don't like the way playerX is talking to me, if they are annoying, if they are a slow player who takes too long; I can give them a red thumb so I never have to play against them again.

I've never played against you fuonlynu, so I don't know exactly what the problem is; but it looks like it's your communication skills. If this forum is any indication, you are argumentative and unwilling to listen to counter points. Most people do no red-thumb you for defeating them at Hearts (or any game). I would think it quite rare, in fact.

Personally, the people I have red-thumbed (so I don't have to play them ever again) were either rude, or took way too long to take their turns. (Maybe I should have kicked them from the game, but I didn't want to hurt their karma that much... I'd just rather not play them again).

So be nicer, or perhaps just say nothing; and you'll start getting green thumbs again and your karma can climb higher.

Many people in this thread are telling you that it's your poor communication skills that are resulting in your red thumbs. They can't ALL be wrong, can they? Maybe it's not EVERYONE ELSE. Maybe it's you.

Hope you can figure it out.

Does kicking a person from a game hurt his or her karma as donteatpoop suggested?

Kicking someone out of a game that has not yet started does not hurt his karma.

But kicking someone out of a game in progress because he is out of time does hurt his karma in the same way as if he had left the game himself: -10 the first time, -20 if the last penalty was less than one month before. Meaning that if someone is kicked out of 6 games in a few days because he could not show up on time, his karma will drop down to 0 (very bad reputation, not able to talk in the chat anymore).
If you want to kick out someone who timed out without impacting his karma, you can propose to abandon the game collectively, without penalty. But all the other players (except those who are out of time) have to agree.

I think first you have to pay attention to who is making those comments. And some of the ones making them do need to look in a mirror. The vast, vast majority of players here are not going to red thumb someone for lack of communication, or because they chose to end an invite for a game that hasn't started, and such things like that. Some people get booted from a game invite 3 times in a week, not over several years. And ignore the troll on this thread.

Just as a note, I don't think I'd even notice if I got booted off an invite. Even if I remembered that I took it, I'd probably think the admin just chose to end the game before it started, and I figure they have their reasons and I don't get worried about it.

I'm not sure if this is correct. I'm not aware that we can even kick someone out of a game anymore. The Expel ability definitely doesn't exist. You can skip someone's turn when they are overtime. Unless they have changed it, it used to be that person could actually rejoin the game again so that this was not actually "kicking them out." (They may have changed that. I detest that skipping turns so much that I left for 8 months after that.) I also thought that was just an overtime penalty. Considering that you can skip someone's turn as soon as they're one second over time, that really should not be counted as abandoning the game.

If you want to kick out someone who timed out without impacting his karma, you can propose to abandon the game collectively, without penalty. But all the other players (except those who are out of time) have to agree.
Yeah, that went over well the last two times I tried it.
