Frequent suggestions despite being busy on turn based games

Post by brisdaz »

When you have many turn based games (some of which may be near real time) but no real time games nothing is listed next to your name below an open table. This leads to many open table creators thinking you're free and getting frustrated when no-one responds. Is there a way to fix this?

I don't play that many turn-based games at once, and seldom "almost real time." So my name shows up on every game I have on my "want to play" list, and I'm constantly seeing requests for me to get on some live game. I don't see how this relates to how many turn-based games you have going, or whether you're playing them "almost live." Just because I'm not playing live doesn't automatically mean I have time for an actual live game any more than you do, or that I want to play one, or that I'll want to play the one someone wants me to. The same thing happens to both of us, despite that we play two different ways, so I don't see the relevance. (What we need is the ability to just turn that thing off!)

If someone is not finding enough people for the game they want to play, it's probably frustrating, but it's going to be just as frustrating whether your name is in that list, whether it shows you playing a game or not, or even if there was no list. That's another reason I don't see the relevance of it. i.e. you having a lot of turn-based games going is not changing anything. And how do you know they're frustrated?

From seeing your posts both here, and on the one group, you seem to be frustrated, and my guess is you perhaps are projecting that onto other people? And I think you're frustrated because you appear to have some unrealistic expectations.

I agree.

I think there should be better segregation in general between real-time and turn-based.

I play all my turn based games, and finish up, then click 'Play Now' and it shows up with turn based games.
Nah mate, I'm ready for some real-time games!

I would play Peurto Rico turn based, but not interested playing it in real-time.

I think players should have more control over the suggestions setting. During the evening in my time zone, it's extremely hard to find people to play 3+ player games. It'll say that 53 people want to play this game, but I can invite every single person on that list and still not get enough people.

Under each game, it should say something like this:
Suggestions on for real time
Suggestions off for real time
Suggestions on for turn based
Suggestions off for turn based

This will not only provide a more accurate number of who is actually interested in playing a specific game, but it will also allow players who don't like getting suggestions to turn them off.

For the most part, I'm not bothered by suggestions, especially if it's one of BGA's less popular games. The only time I was annoyed by suggestions was when I had Saboteur on my list. The suggestions were overwhelming, and it's not a game that I play frequently enough to justify it being on my list. I just ended up deleting it.

While I agree there should be more segregation (and not just in this, but in many ways), I don't see how that relates to the Play Now defaulting to turn based games. It does that if that's what you've been playing. And it makes sense. Those of us who play predominantly turn-based want it to default there. Just as those who play predominantly real-time would want it to default there. It's not like it knows you changed your mind.

The term "Play Now" doesn't relate so much to turn based games. Should be "join now" for turn based, and "play now" for the real-time.
But you've helped exaggerate the point, there should be better segregation.

There are times aswell were starting a new game, and the default settings for the game are 1 day per turn, when really you're after a real-time game.
Another mixed up all together kinda problem that could be better.
