A way to appeal loss in reputation?

I just lost reputation and it was completely undeserved.

My connection was being weird and I even told the table about it. No responses.

I even asked not to expel me. There was nothing I could do. Absolutely no response.

As soon as my time was up, I was skipped.

I try to be polite on here. I constantly give people the benefit of the doubt if their time is up.

And then I lose 80 points on my reputation because some people are jerks.

Can't there be a way to appeal loss in reputation?

They weren't jerks, they were entitled to expel you if you ran out of time.

Those are the rules. The only 'jerk' behaviour I have encountered on the site is players thinking the rules should not apply to them.

I followed the rules. I made moves as soon as I could and the server took forever to update my moves. I pointed this out to the table and got no response.

I guess a little empathy is too much to ask.

Historically, if there is a server issue all penalties for slow play/time expiration are removed. This includes any loss of reputation.

Leaving a game in progress (which is how the system counts it when you are skipped) is a loss of 10 to your karma. In order to have a loss of 80, you would have to do this several times. If your connection is acting weird and you time out of one table, that might gain some empathy. Knowing that your connection is not working, and still willing to waste other people's time doesn't.

It's because it happened twice in a month. The first time was during a game of Jaipur. I got up after my turn to use the bathroom with over a minute left on my timer, came back, and the guy had already expelled me.

This sn time time was a server issue for which the penalty hasn't been removed. And again, I didn't leave the game, I was at the computer the entire time, making moves and watching the server update my move for 30 to 40 seconds each time. I informed my opponents of this and they were uncommunicative.

I've played some great games with great people here that seem to enjoy discussing the game while playing. I think two games out of the 87 that I've played causing a 20 point reduction in reputation seems a bit much when I don't leave games and dislike when people do.

Guess I'll just have to try to build it up again. Bit annoying since I follow the rules and this happened because of the server being slow.

Sometimes loss of reputation is undeserved, because everybody can sometimes have a problem (connection or something else). But the system is designed so that if it happens only sometimes, there's no harm: you gain reputation each time you finish a game without problem. Your reputation is 80%, which is very good, nothing to worry about. And if you don't have problem in more than 10% of your games, your reputation won't drop.
So no problem here

Well, here I am again. This time for a different reason.

I use this site to practice playing games that I have learned, but don't own. I know that some publishers allow their games here in the hopes that players will want to buy their games.

Race for the Galaxy is definitely a game that I'm interested in. Unfortunately, I live in South Korea and I'd like to make sure that I enjoy a game before I purchase it and have it sent here considering shipping costs.

Sadly, even though I knew how to play the game, there came a point in the game where I couldn't advance the game because of the user interface. I told my opponent that he/she had every right to expel me at this point. (S)He tried explaining to me what to do and when it didn't, I told him/her he could expel me.

And again, I'm down 20 reputation points. Sorry for trying to broaden my horizons.

This reputation system is starting to seem like a poor system if you are trying to draw more people into the hobby of board gaming. That is where I am right now and at this point, this site is actually acting as a deterrent to for me getting into more games.

You need to learn more about the site. If you're jumping into a new game here, even if you have already learned the game outside of here, don't jump into a game with ELO on and at fast speed. That Race for the Galaxy game was on fast speed. That doesn't really allow for you trying to learn the interface. Or the rules on a new game. Fast speed is for people who know the game well and can move quickly on it (or have been drinking too much coffee).

Take a no-ELO game that's on slow speed. Or use the turn-based games to learn them, including learning the interface which we can all have trouble with. And perhaps have a bit more patience. If someone tried to explain what you needed to do and it didn't work, you needed to say so and see if they can help you out more. You're the one who said they could expel you, so they did. What did you expect to happen when you made that offer? And you had already had that experience and knew what it would do to your reputation. We get that new members don't always know what is going on, but this wasn't your first time of taking a reputation hit, so it's a little harder to feel sympathetic about it.

You can still take games that aren't restricted to higher reputation levels. Take the slow speed ones, or switching over to turn-based until you learn the game is a good idea. ELO I guess is your choice, depending if you care about that. On turn-based you'll have plenty of time to play around with the game. Then finish the games so you can start getting some reputation points back up. And if you don't understand something about the site, that's what the forums are for. But once you've been answered, if you keep making the same mistake, you're going to have a harder time of it.
