Why are some games real time only?

Post by bockatore »

So I just played Time Masters, and I think it is an amazing game. I love deck building games, and it is a very interesting take on that genre.

Any idea why this isn't being offered as turn-based? As far as I can tell it would be well suited for that style of play, especially since once you get an engine going you are playing a lot of cards on your turn and your opponent has nothing to do while they wait for you.

Thanks!

Time Masters is real-time only supposedly because the creator wanted it that way.

Some others are supposedly real-time only because they are buggy. Like Gear & Piston.

This game has been developed at a moment when turn by turn games didn't exist. Neither the button 'undo move'.
When the possibility to play a 'turn by turn game' appears on BGA, this game had to be redeveloped to work well.
Specially due to the fact that 'undo my move' is a rule in Time master' and it works well in real time game

Also, one of the newer games is real-time only because of the way game play works -- the captain makes a decision, and players may (but don't have to) add cards based on that decision, out of normal turn order. Making it turn-based would be a nightmare.
