Cooperative Tournament Rankings

Post by mvgimmick »

I would like to recommend that for tournaments with cooperative series, I think there should be a tiebreaker where it would be sum of your scores in the game rather than point difference.

For example, in hanabi, both players try to achieve the highest score possible, but since both players will always receive the same score, it is marked as a tie with score difference of zero. However, some scores will have a 25:25 tie versus a 21:21 tie, of which the perfect score should be rewarded.

With the status quo, I'm not sure how the rankings are determined, but in this tournament, the tournament rewarded [1] Nanainka, [2] turtler7, [3] ufm. I'm not exactly sure how the trophies were awarded, perhaps it was in order of game completion (since score difference of all five players in this event were all "zero").

I made a cross-table of what the results would be based on total score.

I guess the rankings between tied players are determined randomly.
Ties occurred many times but I couldn't find any tendency or whatsoever.

Co-op games record 'tie' for every game.
So if everybody plays just enough to not lose the game then the rankings will be completely random, since every game is technically tied.
Well, current tournament system is not suited to co-op games.

In this case I think the trophies are awarded due to the ELO of the players in the moment of the end/beginning of the tournament (as it was during my Hanabi "tournament", long time ago). The system counts that all of you have the same "score" (zero wins) so assumes the winner is the one with the best score outside the tournament.
[edit2]Oh. I realized that tournament I participated was swiss and yours was roundrobin. Not sure how it affects what I said.
After checking just two players I see that I was wrong, apparently. Third-place ufm: 849 (start) 828 (end) and second-place turtler7 513(start) 499(end)...
[/edit2]

So basically,
Well, current tournament system is not suited to co-op games.
Yeah.

[edit1]
As for Hanabi, I am not sure any tournament got any chance of being totally fair. ELO is best for 2p games ... but 2p Hanabi can have sometimes really bad deck and low score can be effect of not poor skills, but "discarding 5 as best option". It would require players playing on the very same deck and check their result.
(And TBH I am not sure what's the point of solo-coop tournaments. What's the challenge? Be better than other guys? Without assuming others are as good as you during the game, it's pretty annoying to play with them...)

still, I agree with mvgimmick

Hanabi can not be played in a single elimination tournament mode, but it can be in round robin or Swiss system.
Then all end scores should be counted and the player with most end scores, wins.

It is true that unexperienced players can be annoying, but that 's for the competition as well.
also, worse deck is a possibility, but isen't almost any game about having at least a bit of luck?

so yes, please change the hanabi tournament possibilities;
- only Swiss and round robin
- at least 3 players in a tournament

kind regards,
Kim

If I remember correctly (and I may be wildly wrong on this) the last tiebreaker for all tournaments is total thinking time remaining.

Tie-Breaker for Swiss System should be lowest sum of partner's points (negative "SOS"). So if you have the same score in the end, you will rank higher, if your partners did worse in their other games. Why? Because it means you were able to get the same score with partners that seem to be weaker players (in this tournament) than the partners of the other player.

And yeah - same decks would be awesome. Hard to do that on Round Robin but in Swiss that would definitely be an improvement. But it means that replay or peeking should be impossible until after the tournament.
