Understanding time limits?

Post by Olin IX »

I can see in a setup of a game time limit like "3:00/3:30" per turn. Could anyone explain what "3:30" means? It have never happened to me I had an opportunity to have 3:30 minutes during my turn...

3:00 + 3:30 per turn

Total time + Time increase per turn

Any settings that have a time increase exceeding the total time increases the total time to the max.

As to why they chose '3:00 + 3:30 per turn' instead of '3:00 + 3:00 per turn', I have no idea. The devs set these parameters.

And, expanding on N_Faker's explanation a little:

Total time is the maximum amount of time that any player will ever have in the game. The game starts with each player having this amount of time.
Time Increase per turn is the amount of time that is added to the clock when the player makes their move, up to the Total time.

Now, in this case, it is rather odd that the increase is more than the total, but it could happen that someone runs out of time, goes negative by more than 30 seconds (and doesn't get skipped :) ), then makes their move. They will then have less than the Total time for their next move.

This is more evident in games where Total time is much larger than Time Increase. For example, 1 move per day turn based games are typically "5 days/24hrs per turn." In this case, a player is allowed 120 hours to make their first move. If they make it at hour 119, they will then have 25 hours to make their next move. If they then make 5 moves within an hour of when it is their turn, it will increase back up to 120 hours. However, even if they make a move within the hour after it gets up to that point, it will never go above 120 hours.
