Just wanted to contribute to this, from someone who doesn't say anything in most games, so that you can see there is another side to this and stop assuming bad things.
Somewhere in the FAQs or something, it does say that it's a nice idea to at least say hello, have fun, etc. And when I first started playing here I did do that. And some people didn't even respond. After a number of games, I just did not keep it up - I would forget. But I simple got out of the habit. It is not because I think I'm playing with a machine. I'm well aware there's a real person on the other end of that game. And for me, it has
nothing to do with ELO or being too competitive to bother saying hi.
I just got out of the habit. OK, so maybe we need a reminder occasionally, but there's really no need to be giving people red thumbs for a reason like that. (And if you do, you'll be giving out a lot of them.)
But, if someone says something to me first, I do reply. Most people I play with don't say anything.
I think you need to keep in mind that it becomes far too easy to just start playing and not really think about things like this. It doesn't mean that all people who don't start out saying something are unfriendly people. I'm a member of that "friendly & chatty" group, or whatever it is called, and even playing with some of them, we don't always talk. And I hardly ever see anyone post on it. I think it's just because people have a habit of letting things go after a while - it's a bit human nature.
I also know people don't always see that there's something on the chat.
It would be nice if this could be as social as my game group, but it's just not.
