Question about "undo in picking building/laborer" in The Builders

Post by iliz sera »

Hello everyone, I have a question about The Builders game (in either version):

As far as I know since the day I joined BGA and played The Builders, there was always an option of making undo moves for picking building and laborer. My question is: why do we have this option? The positive: to undo the wrong moves, thus make all the moves become best as possible. The negative: people will make the undo moves on purpose: to check the next building/laborer in the deck.

Because I read the rules and there is clearly no sentence about being able to re-choose a building/laborer. Meanwhile almost all use this special rule on BGA to check the cards and choose not to pick an ugly building for their actions (so that the next opponent would have to pick an ugly one before having the better, which costs 2 actions); the same goes with laborer. Should it be counted as cheating?

As you all can see, in real life, it will not fun anymore when you play any cardgame and you are able to foresee the first card on the deck (unless there is a special card tell you to do so). So I think this should also be applied in this game as well. For being able to undo while sending laborers to buildings, I think it is acceptable as it does not really affect anything, just rearrange the moves. Comparing with picking building/laborer, this undo will affect less to the game.

How do you think about this idea?

There's a table option to disable the Undo functionality for picking cards. Personally, I would also like its disabled value to become the default for tables, and require active selection of a nonstandard variant by enabling the option.

If the information about the next card is supposed to be known (and why wouldn't you check it for free) the interface could just show it without going through the tedious pick-undo motion. Alternatively, a proposal for "fixing" the current implementation: when you pick a card, the pool is not refilled until you take your next action, at which point Undo is not possible anymore. If you'd like to pick another card of the same type, a button to indicate confirmation would flip it.

I think if you do something that give you informations, you should not be able to undo.
Imagine poker with undo!
If undo is possible, then you should not have see the next cards in any game.
