Expeling for time after player didn't expel you for time

Post by Speusippus »

If you are way over time but your opponent has not expeled you for time, despite multiple opportunities, then though you are within your rights to expel him if he goes over on time in one move, you are, nevertheless, kind of a jerk for doing so. In my opinion.

Just putting that out there...

When creating or joining a game, there is an option for setting the game speed. I think a good play experience for all players involved requires that every player adhere to this speed setting.

On the odd occasion a player may experience technical difficulties (e.g. Internet connection issues, computer crash) or real-life situations which may contribute to exceeding the allotted time. These issues are out of any player's control, so I would be more understanding. In these cases, it's best for the player to inform other players of the reason. Even so, if a player disconnects or is unresponsive for an extended period of time, I would probably still expel them. It's not necessarily anything against that player; just that I don't want to be stuck in a game that's not moving.

If a player consistently exceeds the time limit as you describe just from deciding moves, I think expelling that player is quite appropriate. I would give the player a warning before expelling them. That player should play games where the speed setting is set to be slower/no time limit, or communicate to the other players before the game starts to see if they are okay with players exceeding the time limit. I think a slow player joining a fast game is poor etiquette.

I don't think there's anything wrong with expeling players for time in general.

What I was saying is that if player A refrains from expeling player B for time, several times in one game, then if player B expels player A for time when it is A's first time to go over, then player B is being very impolite.

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't reading carefully enough in your original post to notice who was doing the expelling. Of course the length of time that one goes over by is important to note as well. I agree that if another player has allowed you to exceed the time-limit, returning the favor would be the sensible thing to do. If a player becomes unresponsive, that would still be grounds for expulsion. If both players are going over, then probably they could both play at a slower setting in future to avoid the problem altogether. I think going over the time-limit leaves a record on your profile. Not necessarily a big deal, but not desirable either. Once again, I think communicating with the other player is important. Just a simple chat message to tell the other player you're still there and thinking, and ask them to give you a few more minutes so they have some expectation. And if you're going to expel a player, it would be nice to give them a final warning.

also, if there's a beginner at the table, the time clock should automatically shift to the slow speed. getting expelled when you're still learning the game is no fun.

You might be a 'beginner' on this site because you've never played the game online before. You might have played the game offline before, and could even be an expert at the game. If you are learning how to play still, you should really communicate this to your opponents, so they can decide if they want to play with a beginner. If the game speed is not to your liking, don't start the game.
