Penalties for resigning?

Hi guys, I'm new here but I've been playing online boardgames forever I'm loving this site: excellent work!!!
Just one thing: as reasonably experienced Go player, I've always thought that resigning when a game is lost is an elegant and polite move, which saves time to both players and also conveys the message "the game is lost, I know: it can be turned around only if you make some kind of really stupid mistake and I don't want to rely on that".
Ok, having said all this, looks like there is a penalty here if you resign: is that correct?!

No, on 2 player games it's possible to "concede" (game menu) the game and the elo loss is exactly as it would be if you keep playing and lose.

Note however that some players consider it rude to concede in some games / situation.

Me i.e., I think it is very unpleasant if we played a very long game and then my opponent concedes on the last turn which avoids counting by only saving some minutes. I think if you played so far, you can as well finish it (but that's also at go where it's a bit inpolite to resign when you're already filling neutral points ).
When the result is clear in an early stage though, I consider it the right move to concede the game. Like in hex / Quoridor, where you can see the unavoidable result early but still have a lot of moves to do.

Just expanding on Silene's post: there is some terminology on the site that can cause confusion.

"Resigning/quitting" a game implies leaving a game in progress. The system thinks the game should continue, and gives a penalty to the person who doesn't play. The system treats it as a loss for the person who left and a win for everyone else, adjusted for the amount of the game that was completed.

"Conceding" a game is only available in a 2-player game (and only when the game has progressed past the half-way point). This is when one player feels leaving the game and giving the other player the win is more important than finishing the game. (There are other threads [and Silene mentioned it] about how this can actually be considered rude, but it was designed to save time.) The system treats it as if the game had gone to completion. Only the person who concedes needs to do anything.

"Abandoning" a game is available for any number of players. This is when all players agree that something more important is happening than finishing the game. It requires all players to agree. If the game is abandoned, the system treats it as if it never existed.
