Special styles and templates available for translating ?

Post by Evilpotatoe »

I've noticed Innovation's gamelog has a good readability, and it seems the main reason is the style applied to the strings : most key informations are in bold, and pictures symbols are used for epochs and resources.

So I'd like to improve some other translations's style, but didn't find much clue about what is available.
Is there a manual/guide about it somewhere, and could it be added, maybe as an "Advanced features" item, to the "How to translate" help section ?

Here's an example string :

${player_name} tucks ${<}${age}${>} ${<<}${name}${>>} from his hand.
Where ${<}${age}${>} is replaced with an icon, and ${<<}${name}${>>} with the card's name, in bold.

So I'd assume ${<<} and ${>>} tags are for bold style ? Am I right ?
Is ${<} the same with pictures, or maybe italics ? Is there anything else to know, and where can I find it ?

[extra] And how could I know which pictures are available for a game ? I guess checking existing translations is enough here, since I couldn't add any anyway ?

Actually this styling system is specific to Innovation. It's not something that exists in BGA by default, so it doesn't apply to any other game.

On a more general note, any interface element or styling choice is the responsibility of the developer of the game. Translation is about making the meaning and intention of the developer accessible in another language as accurately as possible. Theoretically, even a mistake should be translated as a mistake ;)

Damn, why must the best things always be made so specific ?! (note : Carcassonne, or circle of life do have nice logs too, with images)
Ok, so not even HTML or anything like this in logs ?
Thats too bad, on many games, they are quite unreadable :/

I smiled at the mistake's preservation (hey, my nick features "potatoe", with an 'e' !)

Anyway, let's throw in some bottles :
- having some basic styling features (say, at least bold and italics) would be great
- including a simple example in the/a BGA Framework tutorial as incentive for the developers to make use of them would be even greater
- and avoiding to pollute every tab's game's chatlog with unrelated information (friend XXX connected/disconnected; YYY suggests you to join game ZZZ) would also help (Why isn't this put in a separate chat window, like is the "gobal log" ? It would also let us mute those !)

Ok, I have a cellar full of these, so I'll stop here, I know all this takes time.

Thanks for this answer.
