Opponent should lose when they run out of time.

Post by wobuffet »

My opponent ran out of time while playing Quoridor. I was confused why I didn't automatically win. By the time I figured out I had figured out I had to click extra buttons in order for my opponent to get a disconnect warning where he got even more additional time before losing, he had enough time to find a good move he probably wouldn't have found otherwise, while meanwhile I missed a good move because I played within my time limit. When playing a ranked match, you should lose when you lose on time, and I feel like I got cheated out of a win because I didn't know how to abuse the time ridiculous time system.

TLDR: Opponent should lose when they run out of time.

I play regularly where time is not an issue. Either my opponent or I run over but neither of us cares. We continue playing. Automatic loss when over time is a bad idea.

We learn most from our mistakes. You now know how to expel someone when they are OT. A lesson learned from a loss.

How do you know your opponent doesn't care when you run out of time? For all you know they could have been like me, new to the site and unaware of the stupid timeout rules. Automatic loss when time is over is not only a good idea for games, it is a staple in games like chess. However, I am not against optional opt in overtime forgiveness in unranked games.

Even after knowing the current time system, I can either abuse the time system by letting my time to go over and give my self an unfair advantage against newer users, or I can play within the time limit and put myself at a disadvantage against experienced users. I'm not just mad that I lost, but that I can't play a fair game.

In any game, after a few seconds of inactivity from the opponent, a link "This player is not playing, what can I do?" appears at the top of the play area.

It has been a while since I've had an opponent run out of time, but I believe as soon as someone goes into negative time a button appears to all players with a positive clock allowing them to expel the player who is out of time.

The F.A.Q. specifically mentions how the time system works, and that it is a player action to expel players who are out of time.

In order to run into negative time your opponent had to have at least a few episodes of slow play where you could have clicked the "what can I do?" link. Reading the F.A.Q. would have alerted you that you would have to take an action. It is not an "unfair advantage against new users" if those users do not learn the rules of the site, any more than it is an unfair advantage against new players to a game if you've read the rule book and they haven't. The rules are available and apply to everyone, so they are therefore fair. (Actually, the first time you play a game, your time is increased. It is therefore unfair biased towards the new player...)

However, if you want to try the strategy of taking more time than negotiated against new users, feel free. The system does automatically decrease a user's reputation for each occurrence of a negative clock or table disconnect. I hope the few wins will be worth the reputation loss.

BGA was developed with the idea that playing games should be fun. As such, playing a complete game is more important than tallying wins and losses. An automatic loss the instant a clock goes negative is against this philosophy.

For the expel button, by the time I got past my confusion on why I didn't already win on time and clicked the button and then read the description before clicking confirm, my opponent already gained the substantial time advantage.

For the FAQ, it is hidden in the forum section which isn't usually the first place new users visit, so they would have no way of knowing it even existed. You say the rule was designed around the idea of fun, but I don't think losing because of an unknown rule listed in an FAQ I didn't know existed is fun.

Strange. My link to the FAQ is in the footer of every page displayed by BGA....

What isn't yet mentioned is the obvious problem with time causing the game to end, when there are more than 2 players. In such games it ruins the game for everyone which would not be fair either.

I completely agree with this, for real time games, going over time should be an automatic loss but with no "leave" penalty. It should work just like a resign from the player out of time

Making this an automatic action would also remove the blame that would otherwise be placed on the player that initiated or completed an expulsion.

This would also remove the choice for users that do not wish to expel other users, the site even has added functionality to continue a stalled game by changing it to a turn-based game or just abandoning it.
