Having to change to arena or simple at top gives us extra clicks to do.
Have an Arena box to click down with the game area and 1 for the Regular open
that does not require clicking Open.

Have where we can start a number of games from the Lobby without additional clicks or change
of page views in either mode.

Hi

Will there be some sort of punishment for people who refuse to play and just sit atop the league? The person sitting at the top of the beta elite league hasn't played for over a week now.

 :o

Isn't this one of the things Arena mode was designed to fix?

Wouldn't making Ranking be more than just highest ELO be an easier fix than this?

Ranking could be based on ELO up to the top tier (possibly the top 50 players, or top 5%, whichever is larger)
Past that point, it would need to be a combination of ELO position and head to head records, modified by logarithmic decay based on frequency of game play (or, really, lack thereof).

I don't see how to view my opponent's ranking in Arena mode.

In this game: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=63651988 another player didn't show and the game was cancelled. As a result, I lost 4pts of arena elite rating. Certainly not a big deal, but since I didn't get to play in this game it does not seem fair (especially factoring in that a win right now gives me very few points); I was wondering if you had an explanation.

this is the same problem they have with Elo, where when a game isn't finished your final position is considered a tie with all players (besides the one quitting). When someone quits everything besides wins against the player who needs to be disregarded. (at least in Elo they cap it at 0 points so you can't go negative...but really it needs to be a no result against the non-quitting players, not a tie!)

You're right the proposed fix was not the correct solution.

Also, as far as I can tell, the proposed fix does not work either:
A recent example, the 2 players in 2nd place exchange ELO points as if it was a draw, which is not meant to be the case.

Opponent matching is so poor that it's discouraging me from playing Arena Mode.

In Puerto Rico, inexperienced players tend to make naive moves that can disproportionately favour the player who goes immediately after them. That gives the seat order a huge influence on the outcome - which doesn't make for very fun games.

PR's "balanced" mode is there to help balance out seat-order bias problems with the game. Adding inexperienced players into the mix undoes all of that.

In "Simple" games I usually set the player level to Good+, or Strong+ - which is enough to weed out the players who really don't know how to play. I've not found anything in "Arena" mode that guarantees me decent opponents. The "Opponents' level" chooser is just weird: If I set "I never want to play with..." to everything except "My level", it makes a table that *only* accepts "Average" players!! I'm "Expert", so that's very far from what I want.

CONSTRUCTIVE SUGGESTION:

I realise that you want to emphasise the seasonal ladder aspect of Arena play, so restricting players by ELO is against the spirit of that. My goal is to exclude players who don't yet know how to play the game. You already do that by setting a "100+ ELO" barrier for entering the Arena. In PR at least, players with 100 ELO almost certainly do NOT know how to play the game.

I suggest that you make this ELO barrier vary from game to game. Set it to AT LEAST 200+ for Puerto Rico.

This will force new players to learn the game in "Simple Mode", before they can enter the Arena.
