How to Remove ELO From My Experience

Post by Rico Cordova »

I am looking for a very casual experience. I use board games as an escape from the pressures of my career, which is very competitive. As such, I have absolutely no interested in ELO, competitions, rankings, arena seasons, etc. In fact, I find it to be such a detriment to my experience that I will likely not renew my premium subscription next year, if there isn't an option to remove this from my profile/experience.

As I navigate the different areas of this site, I notice ranking/ELO/whatever is just EVERYWHERE. I takes up UI real estate all over the place.

I would prefer an option in my profile that will allow me to COMPLETELY REMOVE all references to ELO, competition, rankings, etc. If I load a page, and over half of the page is devoted to information I don't care about, I conclude the site to be almost useless. BGA has started moving in that direction for me. I find myself preferring other online gaming options just because of the bloat and focus on ELO here.

Perhaps there is a way to disable all references to ELO already, and I'm just unaware. If so, could someone please provide me the steps necessary to disable this? Thanks in advance. :)

To be clear, I don't care if the algorithms continue to use ELO for their matchmaking. Don't care...don't care, don't care. I just don't want to see it. The analogy for me is like trying to read a news website where literally 50% of the content is Lorem Ipsum. That is exactly how I experience this site. 50% of it is not only uninteresting and useless to me, but is disruptive, distracting, and takes away from the user experience.

I totally understand your point of view...

As a programmer, I always try to anticipate the need of users, and I never understood why an option to remove ELO doesn't exist yet. I would not use it, but I understand some people expressively don't want to see it.

Can you please clarify that choosing training mode would remove every single reference for ELO/ranking/etc throughout the entire site for my user experience?

Can you also please clarify the implications of choosing training mode. It is my understanding that by choosing training mode, I would effectively remove a huge portion of potentials players from my options for opponents. If this is the case, it is not a suitable substitution for removing references to ELO.

From a product development standpoint, any option that reduces the benefit of the user experience is a poor product. If choosing these options puts limitations on my experience, I would not consider it a solution, but an indication of a poor design.

@sourisdudesert I don't think he is saying that he wants to play games without ELO. I think he is saying that he doesn't want to see the ELO. It's fine if the other player sees his ELO. He just doesn't want to see it.

@rico cordova: afaik, the site does not have an option to do that.

The game option would pair you with like minded opponents. It does turn off the ELO in the game pages and results.

There are lots of requests for changes and updates to the site from a range of different users, you can raise a suggestion:

Training mode is absolutely not satisfactory for this player. He wants to play with competitive players, he simply doesn't want to see the Elo.

I'm horrified by the simplified response of saying "use training mode". It proves the moderator doesn't try to understand what the player would like, nor does he realize the implication of what he's saying....

I perfectly understood the author and provided the most useful answer.

If this person is not satisfied, which is posible, he can write it himself and I think he do not need anyone else to express this.

What makes you think you understand what the OP wants any better? He has said he doesn't want to play with competitive players in another post. Moral: let the OP clarify himself what he wants.

Personally, I think training mode is the best option for him and yes it does cut out a big proportion of players but I guess most players play competitively 🤷

Because he already probably knew about the training mode. That's why answering "use your training mode" didn't bring any additional information. This player clearly stated he wanted the same competitive experience, but without the Elo visible. It's not at all equivalent to training mode.
A valid answer was "sorry you just have training mode for now, we won't provide your feature".
