How do you play the premium version here (double deck size and new characters)? super frustrating.

It only kicks in if you have 5-8 players, as per the rules. You can't play the XL set with only 2-4.

Well, it would be good to be able to explicitly choose the version you want to play in the option ...

Is it still possible to play with the premium cards? The wiki says they are "Discontinued." If they were removed, why? Are they coming back?

Love Letter premium was published by the old printer of the game AEG. Since ZMan games now has the rights, it is unlikely the premium version comes back to bga unless ZMan reprints the extra cards.
