Voice Chat and network errors

Post by derim422 »

I had an interesting one last night where we were able to use voice chat, but we couldn't all hear each other. I could communicate with 2/5 people, another two people could communicate with 4/5 people, and when starting the voice chat I was spammed with server 503 messages. Anyone know if this was due to a lack of server connections or is this instead some sort of odd WebRTC issue?

It would be amazing to somehow integrate Jitsi or a similar project instead of a roll-your-own, but to be fair, BGA might already be doing this.

I'm having the exact same issue. Some players can hear each other and some can't, seemingly in random order. Has anyone figured out how to fix this? or is this a known issue?

Yup, same issue with me too. And it happens when there's less than 5k users, so I don't think load was the issue.

Hi!
We introduced this function in 2015, here is the announcement post: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5637&p=22036
It was the early days of in-browser video using WebRTC.

Now 5 years later, the "some words of warning" still apply, and the more users in the conversation the more it's possible to have some glitches depending on network conditions and communication between different browsers and protocols.

Still, since the beginning of this crisis, our bandwidth bill linked to WebRTC has exploded from under 50GB per month to 3TB, so a lot of players are using this function successfully (probably mostly in 2 player configurations where it usually works well).

Ouch-- that explains a lot. I've become a huge fan of Jitsi, but none of that avoids everything going through your servers unless it is 2 player :D

Wish there was a way to help with that.

Actually not our servers directly, they are dedicated servers rented from a WebRTC company. We have had to upgrade to the highest account bandwidth quota available :D

It could be worth looking into upgrading this technology, maybe using a dedicated framework, now that it is much more used. But it's not at the top of our priorities right now.
