Friends only games

Post by King Hrothbeort »

It would be nice if there were a simple way to set up games with only your friends, so that other players would not join in, and end up being kicked out of a game that a group of friends want to play together.

That's definitely possible, for example: use manual mode, create a table, restrict to the number of players matching you and your friends, invite your friends (this will freeze a slot for them), open the table. Done :)

This makes me wonder a few things
-Are the table restrictions options clear enough? It seems like lots of people either can't find them or don't know how to set them up.
-Should they be checked before the table becomes open? I've been tinkering with the options to see how the restrictions behave, and have had people join tables which I wasn't going to play, and I imagine the case is similar for people trying to limit games to friends that people are filling places before they send the invites, even if they are intending to open the remaining places to other people

As I said here, in a post suggesting that a profile can have a default for all games,

I don't entirely like the idea of making it easier for people to just play in cliques, but I certainly understand why people will want to only play with other players who they can talk to

I also think there should be a way to eliminate/change the time of each turn in a game among friends. As it is now, my reputation has been dinged for taking too long; not because I actually took too long, but rather because I was explaining the rules to a friend who I was having a video chat with. Perhaps another way would be to allow other players an option to "forgive" a player for taking too long.

I may be wrong but I believe if you put the training mode there is no timer per turn.

There is a training mode, I talked a friend through playing Race For The Galaxy using it. There is also the option to go turn based, but does that still allow for the video/audio chat options?

Under announcement BGA stated that there is a "no Time Limit" option. And they made it more visible. Well I can't figure how to limit players, much less what they are offering to. My ELO is bad because we get stuck in test game and we end up getting committed to things we never wanted, asked for or desired. The Interface is not clear. But they are happy the enforce penalties. No I never heard of training mode. Where is that?

Training mode is at the top left when you set up the game. It will make it so there is no time limit and no ratings. Below that is Game Speed, where you can select "No Time limit" but still have ratings.

I didn't know about the Training Mode and hadn't found the Game Speed setting until now. Thank you for pointing them out to me and how they work.

This suggestion has been implemented :)
When you set up a game click on "Restrict table access" then click "Restrict to Group" and select "My friends"
