Cooperative boardgames on BGA and not on BGA

Post by Pamsy »

Does anybody have any suggestions on cooperative boardgames (2+ players) on BGA? We are looking for games such as "Pandemic" where you have to work together to beat the game.
If you have suggestions outside of BGA, those are also welcome!

Thanks!

Hanabi is on BGA, but I'm not sure I can think of many of the other big titles. I don't know if Pandemic would ever be likely as it has an app (so why not just encourage people to use that if you're a publisher?)

By not on BGA, do you mean ones that can be played online? Or in general?
Sub Terra is on TableTopia, and can be played 1-2 players without the premium subscription I believe.
I think that site also has Police Precinct

In terms of regular boardgames (that I think would be interesting targets for BGA)
-Fuse (though they'd need to do something about the dice stacking cards, and it definitely needs the voice chat activated - I don't think it could work as an app)
-Flashpoint Fire Rescue (they could put up one map on here so there was an incentive for people who liked it to buy the full game)
-Samurai Spirit (I think it's close to being out of print)
-Bomb Squad (out of print, programming game that uses some Hanabi mechanics)
-Defenders of the Realm (I think it's out of print)

Thanks for your response, we'll be looking in to those.
We're just looking for something to play together, both online and offline at home. Just like everybody else who is currently homebound I suppose ;)

The boardgames we have at home are starting to get predictable or are just too easy to beat. Like Jurassic world the board game, we go through that game in record speeds and have no real problems with beating it, unless we're playing it wrong :o .

There are also semi-cooperative games such as Fury of Dracula or Mousqutiers du Roi, or cooperative games with the possibility of traitors such as Shadows Over Camelot or Dead of Winter.

For slightly older pure coop games that are still a lot of fun, I might suggest Lord of the Rings boardgame and Ghost Stories. A Touch of Evil also has a coop mode that I find more enjoyable than the competetive game.

If co-op dexterity is of interest, there is Flip Ships (space invaders by flicking discs!) and Menara (a co-op stacking game) - they can't entirely be strategised for because of the Dexterity element, but whether that makes them better or worse is up to you!
Have you looked at Magic Maze on Mars? That's a real time co-op that is hilarious because of how the tasks are divided.
There was one called Jupiter Rescue that got good reviews, but didn't seem to sell well, I was disappointed I never got to try it! (Maybe should ask for that one on here...)

My favourite co-operative board game is Paperback, designed by Tim Fowers . . . it has both competitive and co-operative modes included in the base game. Some describe it as a mash-up of Scrabble and Dominion . . . it is a deck building word game.

We (myself and my dear husband who plays only co-op games) own and enjoy Flash Point: Fire Rescue, Codenames Duet and Forbidden Desert.

You might also be interested in what they offer at Games for Friends and Lovers (on the web and at Board Game Geek) . . . they adapt competitive games to co-operative mode of play. My favourite of their adaptations is Bohnanza . . . ya . . . the bean farming game! It features a compost pile which allows discarded beans to re-enter the game . . . brilliant!

I just checked their website . . . they have more than 50 co-op variants of popular games . . . maybe some of those on your shelf!

Flashpoint fire rescue is a fun one, varying difficulty levels if things get too easy :-P

Escape: The Curse of the Temple is also fun. This is a realtime die rolling type game. You can also change difficulty if it gets too easy :-)...like waiting 1 minute after the time starts to actually start rolling your dice :-)

Of course, if you really are board game geeks, you know about the website, right? ;)

Anyway... https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamemech ... ative-game
Lessee. About seven thousand items listed there, but some of them are expansions and components of the base games.

As far as specific suggestions: Any game where the goal is to beat a defined strategy (the way the game attacks the players) will eventually cease to be difficult/entertaining because the players will have devised a method to combat it. So, the object then is to push that off as long as possible. With that, I like Hotshots. It has a modular board and suggests different configurations, leading to a larger variety of "what's the biggest priority NOW?" options.

Then, there's Forbidden Sky (the sequel to Forbidden Desert). Players actually create the board during play.

Coop games with full information tend to have a quarterbacking issue, though. One player tells everyone else what to do. To combat that, I like the "coop with a (possible) traitor" games. These include Shadows over Camelot and Dead of Winter (already mentioned), as well as Battlestar Galactica and The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31. These are unfortunately out of print, and also don't play well with less than about 5 players.

Then, of course, there's the whole mystery solving series of games. Only good for one playthrough, but they tend to make for enjoyable evenings with friends. Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective (multiple mysteries in the box), Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game (side note: watch out for how deep the rabbit hole is on this one) (5 interlocking mysteries in the box, another available for download), and T.I.M.E. Stories (base game has 1 mystery, expansions are available with new mysteries in them) are my favorites of these.

As far as I know, none of these are available on-line.

Other ideas for co-ops or semi co-ops:

Freedom: The Underground Railroad (this one is pretty challenging)

Black Orchestra

(both of the above are also good to great for the history of the period)

AuZtralia (semi co-op Cthulhu by Martin Wallace)

Legends of Andor (fantasy)
