I haven't verified all of them, but I think the points follow the last page of the rules for Merchant of the Seas expansion.

I thought this meant the official adjustments like Jebbin said, that have been floating around the internet and now are in the latest expansion. However, for the Board Game Arena implementation, it means that if you get a random faction, you start with 20 points, and if you decide to flip to the other side of that same color, you get 15 points. I can't imagine anyone wants to play by this unofficial variant, and it might be a bug.

Before lots of people jump in to correct me, I am wrong. There is a method to the madness. I'm just used to the starting numbers being more diverse, with not so many 20s, but my info is perhaps old.
