Arena Change for next time.

Post by onyx puffin »

When I mentioned the frustration in Arena settings of being elite and the system matching you up with bronze level beginner, whereupon winning brings you little benefit, and losing costs you big time, You (souridudesert) replied:
You can filter your opponent level: On Yathzee, click on the wheel (option). Then choose "Opponents level"
But here is the problem: Why should we have to mark that change every single time?

I surely hope for Arena next time that the feature in the cog wheel keeps it and does not reset every time as it has been doing! It is a pain to click that cog on every game that I pop on for an open table to play.

If you cannot program that, then it would be nice to have a feature for us to be able to have 3 seconds to reject playing a match due to the opponent you matched us up with, especially when person is bronze level and we are elite.

I suppose it is a problem with cookies disabled on your side. For me all settings keep being the same when I use the same browser on the same device and I enabled cookies for BGA. When I log in first time on a different device, I have to reset all my settings (e.g. icon size).

Some general info from the admins would be helpful here. Do we need cookies enabled necessarily or are personal lobby/game settings saved in another way?

Well, it's a mix. Some preferences are set with cookies (when it's a matter of display as it can be different from one device to another) and some in database.

For automatic lobby game preferences, it's in the database. It should be stable (and I checked on a game in arena and my preferences for opponent level are still there).

Please note that game preferences are shared between the lobbies. So if you remove them when playing in simple mode, they are removed globally.

Out of curiosity, what is the reason for this? I think it would be much better if they were not shared. In fact as I have mentioned in a different thread, I think would be nice to even be able to have a completely different set of games as favorites in arena and simple modes.

By the way, if the reason is "It's a pain to code and maintain," I understand and sympathize. But if there is some other reason I am curious to know what it is. Thanks!

Let me also add that you guys have done an amazing job of keeping this site up and running through trying times. Thank you.

Well, that's a good one! Also, "start before you are perfect" :)

I would say if we have to find a reason for everything (we don't in my personal opinion, even if it's tempting to want to), I would say it's because of the order things were done in. First we had the automatic lobby, and on top of it we built the arena lobby, which had basically the same requirements except for enforcing the same set of options for all games. So underneath it's the automatic lobby, and so the preferences apply to both, because actually it's the same. Ideally, they would be separated. But ideally needs a lot of extra work, so it takes a lot of time and sometimes never happens. And we wanted arena to happen.
