I actually regard this update as a bad idea.
The designs for new badges are not attractive in my opinion, and also some of my friends here mumble for it which discourages them from playing. I suggest admins to make a poll when there are major updates so as to better understand public opinion.
For the Xp system, the following problems occurred:
1. I dont think the new system encourages top players to continue. They still won't get any extra credits if they get first of a game, instead, the points of getting first has been deducted comparing to the past which discourages players to climb up.
2. I wonder starting from which day the "toppest" achievement is recorded, this is unfair to some players who have got first in the game in the past before this update.
3. For new games just released, there would have been many players getting the "toppest" achievement. How would you like to tackle with this issue, and starting from which day after the game released would toppest achievements taken into account?
I actually think both system can co-exist here. Both the "current first" and "historial first" as they have different meaning.
The 300 xp cap for tournaments is a temporary thing until they can figure out how best to award them. So all the tournaments that have been changed to 300 will go back to a larger value once they figure out a proper scaling.
To address the other topics.
On #1, while you can't gain any more all-time points by continuing to play, it doesn't discourage continuing to play any more than before...but encourages people to keep playing for the joy of the game (instead of people not playing to protect their Elo...the arena competition also encourages players to continue playing competitive games.
#2 I agree, it isn't perfect, would be nice to be able to apply historical data, but it sounds impossible...well at least prohibitively difficult, so we will have to take what we can get here.
#3 I also agree this is an issue and look forward to seeing what solution they come up with...maybe a game doesn't award xp until a certain date after release, maybe 2 months but just throwing a number out there.
Another question this begs is how is the xp value of a game computed, and could it change over time if a game increases or decreases in popularity? It seems there are 5 different values for rank #1 based on how popular a game is...from 3000 all the way up to 30,000. If a game moves up or down in points due to a shift in popularity would people's past trophy values also change?
