Allow Paid Members To Have Special Voting For New Games

Post by mofro »

I was thinking it would be a cool idea to allow paid BGA members to have special voting priviallges for new game proposals. It would be a great incentive to become a paid member, and support BGA.

Like, they have access to a poll for new game suggestions directly from proposed developers.

Thoughts?

I'm mostly playing devil's advocate here.

While generating revenue for BGA is a great idea, care must be taken on how many extra privileges there are. Otherwise it becomes a pay-to-play site, and attracting new members becomes difficult.

At the moment there is not big privileges in being a paid member, I subscribed this year because my friends wanted me to start games under subscription.

I think less restrictions and MORE privileges in this form (proposing games, more partecipation in suggesting improvements, etc.) would be an incentive to subscribe without keeping new free players out, which is what can happen if they happen to want to play a subscription-only game that noone wants to start.

Curious. You state there are no big privileges, then immediately state one of the largest. The faster start to games and (depending on social interaction levels) the ability to initiate voice/video chat are also nice. Being able to play with two people who live together is nice too.

There are advantages. There are also several threads (unfounded :) ) where people state "Aww, the game gives better dice rolls/cards to premium members." If these already exist, it will be difficult to convince non-members that their voice has any importance if members get a voting bonus.

The games that get developed here are done largely by volunteers, essentially other board-gamers you rub shoulders with on the site. They are free to develop any choice they wish, as long as there is a licence for that game. There is no forcing the hand of volunteers, otherwise they soon stop being volunteers.
The page where you can vote for your favourites is simply a tool to show everyone what kind of things people would like most - if anyone wants to pay attention to that or not...
