How do I clear my notifications?

I have notifications in my profile, but when I click on it it says "2 new notifications", and I click that link and the last notification was from 6 days ago.

Is there a way to mark a notification as 'read'? I feel that when you view a notification, it should go away, rather than stay there forever.
