Time problem with Innovation

Post by Dickster »

When playing a game of Innovation on this site, you're given a certain amount of "thinking time" to ponder your moves. I recently got "booted" from a game and lost it because I used too much time.

In this game, I had piles of cards splayed all over, and my top cards gave me all sorts of options to consider. I had 9's as top cards on a couple of piles, 8's on the rest, and both players had 5 achievements. It was an extremely close game and very near the end.

It would be nice, in a game like this, if you got more thinking time as your board (and your opponent's!) got more and more complicated. Losing a game due to over-using one's thinking time is one thing when the game is early and one player is simply playing way too slowly. But with any game where one's board and options gets more and more complicated as the game progresses, it would be really nice if the time limits were more forgiving.

In many of my games, I believe I'm the fastest "thinker" in the bunch, sometimes to my detriment! That wasn't the case in this game; my opponent had quite a bit more thinking time left on his clock than I did.

I guess what I'm saying is that it would be cool if you could show mercy to your slow-thinking opponent in a situation like this. Maybe you can already do that, and my opponent was merciless for some reason, but that wasn't the feeling I had at the time. It felt more like an automated "you've taken too long for this turn, and we don't care how exciting this game is, we're kicking you out." I believe we both started with something like 3:00 of thinking time. In a face-to-face game of Innovation, anyone would laugh at being that rushed. I had piled up 4:00 of thinking time in a game that had gone on for a good half hour. I guess I should be ashamed of myself.

My own fault? Maybe, probably, whatever. But the feeling still sucks. We had a great game going, and I don't THINK my opponent wanted to win it that way. I could be wrong, and if so, that was his call to make. I guess that's what I'll tell myself, that he was so frightened of my awesomeness that he claimed a cheap timer victory. I hope he doesn't mind.

It's not easy being so scary to my foes, but I guess that the way I intimidate my foes is my cross to bear. End of rant.

It wasn‘t an automated boot (dunno if there even is such on BGA, at least not within regular games), but your opponent pushing to get you kicked out when your time was up. Probably saw you win. And I totally agree that this is a pretty poor behaviour, after a 30min game, and it doesnt look like you had been over time for minutes. Red thumb worthy imho, and i‘d probably send him a PM that this wasn‘t ok.
