how to avoid timing out of games when just learning the game?

So I wanted to learn Carcasonne, so I joined a game. Because it is new to me, about 90% of the way through the game, I timed out, and the game was ended prematurely. How can I get more time to make moves when I am just learning how to play a game? Because I was having to work really hard to avoid timing out throughout... and it is certainly not intentional.

3. OR just play in training mode, it is basically designed for newbies to learn the game.

That way, you'll be playing with people who are also learning the game, just like you.
