Clue 4

Post by Gacona »

I don't understand why, at the beginning of the game, when my partner is the first player, he/she gives me the clue 4. What must I do ? Discard the 4 ?

I've heard about convention of marking 4 to discard.

But it can also be selffinesse... that depends on how much you trust your partner. Having 1234 in starting hand is rare, but not impossible.

It can also mean that partner doesn't like empty clues and your hand is only 4 and 3s, but 3s include a twin card.

I have seen that several times, with different partners...
Now, I discard from the beginning. I consider that, if the 2nd 4 of a color must be saved afterwards, my partner clues it as soon as he/she can.

If it is the Beginning of the game. I will clue 4's as a 'stall'. To give my teammate I chance to clue me before I start discarding. (
Assuming my teammate has no playable card.)

And a 4 is disposable in the early rounds.

Hm... so you clue 4 to stall discarding, and you expect the other person to discard the 4, right? (I assumed 2p)
But then, you assume your discardable chop would be 3 (or a 1/2/4 that have twin on your hand). Because if you have 4 near the chop (and you don't know it), it is not smart to discard randomly clued 4 only to be possibly forced to clue it soon after.

I don't play much 2 players.

But clueing 4 suppose that person got no 5, no pure 2 (and no pure 1?).
So something like g3-b2-r4-y4-b2.

But on these specific hands, I really like clueing 3. So it would mean no pure 3 too?
That became very unlikely: g3-b2-r4-g3-b2, lul.

Or let's take another example: r2-w2-y4-w3-r3.
Here w3 and r3 are really valuable. But clueing 4 could make you keep alive both the 3 of the color of both 2 which is really good. But again, why not 3 then 2?

.

Then, if we go deeper, let's assume your previous player clued you blue: b-x-x-b-x (if it's 1, it's fine, since you don't know which color it is, any clue is good).

And let's take back my last example: r2-w2-y4-w3-r3. Do you clue 4 here? I suppose that's a fine clue, but it has the drawback to not let you draw another card... That's... I think not great.

.

The 4 clues I really like are the one on a hand: r4-r4-x-x-x.
And don't forget the case: r4-r1-r3-x-y4. Where I like 4>r line.

But in summary, most of my example ask the person to discard asap. Really few of them tell that person to be careful about discarding.

Hoping to clarify :) I am not expecting my teammate to discard the 4.

If my chop is discardable, then I will discard it next round.

In the rare case that I discard the same 4 that I clued, then it is already saved! 8-)
