No points for a loss is plainly stupid and unfair

Post by edriwing »

4 games, and 4 loses.
Quite normal as I am a beginner.
But zero points reward, that's plainly stupid.
You learn a lot by your losses.

And what really pisses me off is that I can't play againt many players because my bloody elo is under 100.

You should give 20 points a game even if you losse until 60-80 points.

Yes, I have to agree with you. Especially for TTA. This is a game with no catch-up mechanic and very little luck. In fact, for experienced players, I would even say no luck at all given they can change their strategies at a moments notice based on what cards come out. We have one player in our group who has never lost this game, at least never when playing with us. He started playing the actual board game when it first came out. Then he got us onto the iOS app, and finally BGA. I've played 30 or so games against him, I always place second.

I would not say that is entirely true. Military cards, for example, is a huge variable in the game. Sometimes you draw 4 military cards a turn but just cannot get the right tactics, useful attack cards, or colonies. This and the random appearance of air forces can turn a game upside-down. But of course, experienced players usually handle military affairs more effectively, partly because new players play more peaceful variant games to get familiar with the essentials. Plus, the catch-up action cards are not that powerful.

That, however, may be exactly the point to respond to edriwing's frustration. ELO helps to separate new and experienced players. New players will not feel like far behind with just four turns. Experienced players will not have to play a one-sided game; some players just do not enjoy that and TTA is a real commitment of time (not to mention new players often take more time to read card texts and start over. When I used to play with other new players, a game may last well >90 mins).

It ultimately comes down to matchmaking. If everyone has play-mates of similar skill, everyone is happy. Somehow with all these new members on BGA, matchmaking does not seem as easy as one would thought. My suggestion will be enabling single-player so new players may try to practice by playing against themselves while waiting for a match and also showing an expected game duration that reflects the players's past history.
