I would rather see a "gg" at the end of a lousy game or a "good luck" in a game with no random element than I would seeing nothing. It is an acknowledgement that there is a person at the other side of the screen.

Yeah, to me, win or lose no matter by how much, gg is just a courtesy that you say as an acknowledgement of the other player(s) of the game. Nothing that happens in the game qualifies whether a gg should be given or not.

I don't know, I get frustrated when I have to then close a chat window.

But I'm also open to actually discuss the game afterwards, which just typing two letters doesn't always do afterwards if the game didn't work out well.
Although if I'm on the losing end, that's only tournament games that will annoy me that much because I can't actually concede them.

I often only say GG (by using the smiley icon on the chat box, never typed "gg") when I win, occasionally when I lose (in multiplayer game). But what I really meant was 'Thank you for playing." Not necessarily that it was a 'good' game.

Maybe the BGA should add an smiley icon in the chat box for "thank you for playing." I would use that instead of the ambiguous 'good game'.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I did not read any of the post before mine

Man, chill out. Say gg with a question mark. It adds an interrogative tone that makes, like it really wasn't a good game.

Maybe see it as "good gaming (with you)", an acknowledgement that the other person has provided us an opportunity to play a game that we would otherwise not have had? I figure a little bit of politeness/civility never hurts, because I'm gratuitously assuming that the rest of you are real people not figments of my imagination.

So, remember, If you win in a very fast way and with a great luck, you should keep on mind that your opponent doesn't feel the same satisfaction you have.
I fully agree. Such games should end with "ezpz" NOT "gg".

For some of us (including myself), it is just hard to not take words literally. I also do not like the "gg" especially after an unbalanced game (which is usually objectively not an interesting game), so why do we call it "gg"? I know in my head that "gg" is about acknowledgement and politeness but it still bothers me at times. I know it is just etiquette but it would be easier for me to relate to the etiquette if the words used actually expressed the meaning - like "thanks for playing".

In the same vein, I struggle with the fact that Australians greet each other with "How are you?" and the answer is "How are you?" You are not interested in how I am - why are you asking? :D Why do you say it if you don't mean it? It just feels wrong to me but I know this has simply to do with the kind of communication you are used to.

I would like to thank all persons that added something to discussion.

I remind you that the situation in the current discussion is "My opponent won in a very fast way and with a great luck and then he/she wrote "gg"".

I usually give to words the meaning that they have in normal life and therefore when I write "gg" at the end of a game, is only to say the game we played was a "good game". I think no other meaning can be attributed to "gg".
My opponent, saying "gg", aren't thanking me for playing with me. He/she are evaluating the quality of the game we played that was "good" for him/her.

Certainly, a game won by my opponent in a very fast way and with a great luck, can not be a "good" game.
I am sure that it can not be a "good" game for me and, if you think about just a second, you will agree with me that it can not be a "good" game even for my opponent because he/she won without merit.

So, please, let's evitate "gg" in that situation. It is an useless, inadequate and disrespectful comment.

"Thanks for the game" or "Thanks for playing with me" are neutral ways in which we can say goodbye in a friendly way.

Haha, that‘s exactly what I told my friend as we talked about this topic :)
(Though, the elsewhere expected „fine, and you?“, with no alternatives desired, doesnt have more value to me neither)

Also totally agree with OTs last post - why should we redefine language and meanings just in order to cater to those that are too lazy to type more than 2 letters (3, since „thx“ would do already)?
