Hi Daggerheart,

It's the first edition here, as that was what the license was linked to. The publisher has an update coming, and we have a question out to them as to the edition, so, maybe? But currently it's the first both in art and rules.

I don't suppose that you could inquire whether the publisher would allow the original edition to be played in its entirety, even after any Second Edition changes are implemented on BGA. Having played both, I still prefer the original edition both in terms of gameplay and art style...
Please check my profile for a list of bugs that need upvotes so that BGA will maybe get around to fixing them.

It's a matter of taste and personally I prefer the new version ;)
With the new version, you can play with 5 (market extension).
I buy all the games I play often on BGA, and the old version cannot be found anymore. I have the new edition. :D

brettspielwelt.de has solved this eternal problem. When you create a new play, you can choose between the old and new design.

I have the second edition elements now. It's just a matter of finding time; still plenty of improvements and bugs keeping me busy (plus Fleet is out now, too). If possible I will add a player preference to select the art style so everyone can have their choice.

Yes, having the choice would be ideal, which is why I requested it. The current "publisher message" that's shown when the game loads seems to imply that the first edition won't be available once the revised edition is coded... and I was hoping to change that by making the request before the release is finalized. :-)

Great, thanks, Marcuda!

Please let me be clear about my request, though: my first preference would be for the first edition game (plus its art) to be a playable choice, similar to how Innovation gives the choice of "First edition" and "Last edition" as different options for gameplay.

I may not have made this request as clearly as I could have before... hope it's clearer now. :-)

(Also, I don't understand your comment about Fleet... is this game now on BGA or something? :-)

Hallo,

brettspielwelt kann man zwar wechseln zwischen neuen und alten spiel das stimmt, aber beim alten Spiel muß man den Wert der Karten vom neuen Spiel bezahlen. Aus meiner Sicht nicht halbes und nicht ganzes.

You've done a great job so far implementing the first edition game (except for how I don't consistently get a Round 1 Mistress ;) ). I am very much looking forward to playing the second edition with more balanced costs. Thank you!

Yes I would certainly like to offer as many options as possible. I have no direct interaction with the publisher so I do not know their wishes beyond the specific banner they requested. We'll see how things go when we get there.

Right now I am focused on making the current implementation as good as it can be. I've gotten great feedback - thank you all - but also a bunch of good suggestions. And yes, Fleet is another BGA card game I did that is out in ALPHA now (give it a try!). I started working on it when St.Pete got delayed and now have both to keep up with. Never mind my full time "real" job :P

All that to say, I hear you, and hope to make it possible, but it's going to be a good while before that happens. In the meantime, enjoy Saint Petersburg as is :D

I didn't know this. Indeed, the victory points and costs are sometimes different between the 2 versions

That new artwork is kinda rough and gets in the way of the information, especially compared to the distinct style of the original... hope the original will still be available!

In terms of editions, will the "new society" expansion be available to play with first edition? My understanding is second edition has variations of some elements of that, but more poorly implemented and missing a ton of the best ones. First edition + New Society is always what I've found to be by far the best version of the game. Balances costs, adds great new cards and variation for additional balance, but keeps the exact same gameplay structure, which works well.

Specifically, playing it right now, the lack of balance in terms of observatory cost, mistress of ceremonies being 6 and 3 instead of 3 and 4, and single potjemkin's village instead of scaled set of three, are all leading to less interesting games and less strategy, more luck. Same with the lack of New Farmers in the workers--getting lucky with cheap workers is a way bigger random advantage when there's not an on-its-own beneficial more expensive one.
