Better randomness generator?

Post by Defenske »

I noted from the FAQ that BGA uses PHP int pseudo randomness functions to perform a number of actions on the site involving randomness. As a RPG player I use Roll20.net which uses a quantum roll which may be over kill for some but for hard core dice junkies it's great. Information at -
https://app.roll20.net/home/quantum
https://roll20.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/art ... antum-Roll

I had some curiosity about this when playing yahtzee and rolling the same 5 dice twice in row. I am not a fanatic about these sorts of things. The php is not quite a secure as just providing a result directly from a random generator (at least the way the roll20 folks are doing it).

I wonder if some sort of license for the roll20 quantum roll that could be integrated into BGA's interface?

Two great online gaming sites working together sounds like a dream come true for online game players.

I just saw all the grousing about the randomness on the forum and thought roll20's response to that sort of thing was at a level above what BGA is currently doing. With your increase in users and the arena and competitive play options it might be time to consider how trust in your sites approach will only continue to be scrutinized and demanded.

People are going to complain about randomness (or lack thereof) no matter what. Even if BGA had actual goblins that rolled physical dice and fed the results into the server people would still complain that their opponent rolled three yahtzees whilst they could never get more than 3 of a kind.

True. The human brain is not designed to understand randomness. Look at the example given: the same dice roll twice in a row is presented as evidence of a lack of randomness. In actuality, if such an improbable occurrence *never* happened twice in a row, that would be suspicious. Randomness does not mean improbable events are precisely evenly distributed over time.

Exactly. Added to which people really don't understand the maths involved. Many of the compliants focus on the idea that the random number generator has some kind of conscience and helps out beginners or a player that is losing heavily.

If people don't understand how functions can generate pseudo-random numbers, they have no chance at understanding how quantum fluctuations can be used generate pseudo-random numbers (I don't).

This reminds me of someone who stated that they were using background cosmic radiation to be the basis for their random numbers. "If it turns out there's a signal there, the human race has more important things to do than worry about than the results of my die rolls."
